The Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) HealthCare Run returns to Kariega on Saturday, 9 May 2026, continuing its steady rise as one of the region’s most inclusive and community-driven sporting events. Now in its fourth year, the initiative has evolved from an internal wellness activation into a widely supported race that brings together employees, elite athletes and the broader Nelson Mandela Bay community in a shared celebration of health and movement.
Since its inception in 2023, the HealthCare Run has attracted a cumulative total of 4,390 participants, reflecting consistent growth in interest and engagement. The 2025 edition alone drew 1,897 runners, underscoring the event’s growing appeal and its role as a fixture on the local running calendar. For 2026, participation will once again be capped at 2,000 entrants, reinforcing the need for early registration as demand continues to build.
The race day experience is structured around three distances designed to cater to a wide range of fitness levels and ambitions. Participants can choose between a 5km fun run, a 10km race, or the more demanding 21.1km half marathon. All routes will start and finish at the Volkswagen PeoplePavilion in Kariega, with sections of the course running through parts of the main Volkswagen production plant, offering a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of the region’s most important industrial sites.
The 5km event is open to participants of all ages, though minors are required to be accompanied by an adult. The 10km and 21.1km distances are reserved for individuals aged 16 and older, ensuring appropriate participation across the more competitive categories. Every finisher across all distances will receive a medal, with additional lucky draw prizes adding an extra layer of excitement to the day.
Entry fees have been structured to remain accessible, with the 5km run priced at R50. The 10km race is set at R120 for licensed athletes and R170 for unlicensed participants, while the 21.1km half marathon is priced at R180 for licensed runners and R230 for those without a licence. Proceeds generated from entries will be donated to local charities and non-profit organisations, reinforcing the event’s broader purpose beyond sport alone.
A notable highlight of the 2026 edition is the participation of several prominent South African athletes. The 10km race will feature names such as Melikhaya Frans, a South African Half Marathon champion and international competitor who has represented the country at major championships, alongside Semihle Beda, Okuhle Dloto, Lukhanyiso April and Thandolwethu Matsalo. Their presence adds a competitive edge to the event while also inspiring recreational runners taking part.
The 21.1km field is equally strong, with entries including Sinawo Poti, Lithobe Menzeleli, Mzwanele Maphekula and veteran road runner Desmond Zibi. At 62 years old, Zibi brings decades of experience and a decorated history in long-distance running, embodying the enduring spirit of the sport.
Beyond competition, the HealthCare Run forms part of a global initiative held across 20 Volkswagen sites worldwide each year. While its primary focus is to promote employee wellness, it also serves as an open invitation to surrounding communities, strengthening the connection between VWGA and the region it operates in. The 2026 edition carries additional significance as it coincides with Volkswagen’s 75th anniversary in South Africa, marking a milestone year for the company.
“The VWGA HealthCare Run has grown into a flagship wellbeing initiative at Volkswagen Group Africa,” said Satish Ranchod, HR Director at VWGA. “It not only encourages our employees to prioritise their health, but also allows us to open our doors to the wider community. We are proud to see the continued growth and enthusiasm for the event, and we look forward to welcoming runners of all abilities to this year’s race, in support of healthy living and meaningful community upliftment.”
Race numbers will be available for collection at the Volkswagen PeoplePavilion in Kariega on Friday, 8 May between 14:00 and 19:00, as well as on race morning, Saturday, 9 May, from 05:30 to 06:30. Entries can be secured via webtickets.co.za, with registrations closing on 5 May 2026.
As anticipation builds, the VWGA HealthCare Run continues to position itself as more than just a race. It is a shared stride toward wellbeing, community impact and a culture of active living that extends far beyond the finish line.
