Volkswagen Group Africa has marked a defining chapter in its manufacturing legacy with the production of the one millionth current-generation Polo at its Kariega plant, a milestone that underscores both the model’s global appeal and South Africa’s enduring role in automotive engineering excellence.
The milestone vehicle, a smoky grey, right-hand-drive Polo GTI, has been earmarked for the South African market, symbolising a rare moment where global scale meets local destination. Since the current-generation Polo entered production in 2017 at Plant Kariega, it has steadily evolved into one of the most significant export success stories in the Volkswagen network.
Of the one million units produced, approximately 86% have been shipped to international markets including Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, reinforcing the plant’s position as a critical export hub within the global Volkswagen ecosystem. The remaining 14% have served South African motorists, anchoring the model’s presence on home soil while contributing to local mobility and brand loyalty.
The achievement also reflects the Polo’s deep manufacturing lineage in Kariega. Volkswagen Group Africa began producing the Polo in 1996, spanning four generations of the model and building a legacy that has become inseparable from the plant’s identity. The current-generation Polo alone now accounts for nearly 21% of the 4,803,424 vehicles manufactured at the facility over the past 75 years, while representing 48% of all Polo models ever built there.
Today, Plant Kariega stands as the sole global production and export site for the Polo, supplying 38 countries across Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Germany and the United Kingdom remain the largest export destinations, highlighting sustained demand in some of the world’s most competitive automotive markets and reinforcing confidence in South African-built quality.
This milestone arrives at a significant moment for Volkswagen Group Africa as it celebrates 75 years of vehicle manufacturing in South Africa and 30 years of Polo production at Kariega. It is a dual anniversary that frames the achievement not as an isolated success, but as part of a long-standing industrial narrative shaped by investment, skills development and global integration.
“This milestone is a proud moment for all of us at Volkswagen Group Africa and reflects the dedication and passion of our employees over many years,” said Urich Schwabe, Production Director of Volkswagen Group Africa. “Producing one million Polos in Kariega highlights the trust that global markets place in the quality of vehicles built in South Africa. It also reinforces the Polo’s legacy as one of the most loved and successful models produced at our plant.”
As production continues, the Kariega plant’s role in the Polo’s global journey remains firmly cemented, serving as both a manufacturing powerhouse and a testament to South Africa’s capability on the world automotive stage.
