Volkswagen has been named Electric Car Brand of the Year at the 2026 Which? Awards, a recognition that reflects not just strong performance on paper, but consistency across real-world ownership, testing and consumer experience. The announcement took place at the Science Museum in London, where leading brands from across sectors gathered to be recognised by one of the UK’s most trusted consumer organisations.
The Which? Awards are run by Which?, part of the Consumers’ Association, a long-established independent body that has spent more than 60 years evaluating products and services through rigorous testing, investigation and consumer research. Its judging process combines controlled independent tests with undercover investigations and large-scale consumer surveys, creating a blended picture of how products actually perform once they leave the showroom.
Volkswagen stood out in the electric vehicle category for a combination of reliability, efficiency, safety and innovation. Across Which? consumer surveys, the brand achieved strong reliability ratings, while also performing consistently well in independent assessments. Judges highlighted that Volkswagen’s electric models frequently reached best buy or near-best buy status across different categories, reflecting a level of balance and dependability that is increasingly important in the EV market.
A key factor behind the win was the breadth of Volkswagen’s electric vehicle range. Rather than relying on a single standout model, the brand has built a growing ecosystem of EVs that cover multiple segments and price points. This approach positions Volkswagen as a manufacturer that is actively working to make electric driving more accessible, not just technologically advanced.
Judges also pointed to ongoing improvements in interior technology and user experience, noting that Volkswagen has responded to consumer feedback with meaningful refinements. In an industry where digital interfaces and in-car systems are becoming as important as mechanical performance, this responsiveness played a significant role in the brand’s overall evaluation.
Rod McLeod, Director of Volkswagen UK, described the award as a strong validation of the company’s recent direction in electric mobility. He highlighted the arrival of new models such as the ID. Polo, alongside future developments including the brand’s first fully electric GTI, as evidence of Volkswagen’s commitment to expanding its EV lineup. He also emphasised that affordability will remain central to the brand’s strategy as it seeks to bring electric driving to a wider audience.
According to Which? judges, Volkswagen achieved the highest average test score among shortlisted manufacturers in the category. They praised the brand for delivering strong performance across its range, alongside a willingness to adapt based on consumer insight, particularly in areas such as interior usability and technology refinement.
In a rapidly evolving electric vehicle market, the award positions Volkswagen not just as a participant in the shift toward electrification, but as one of its most consistent and dependable leaders.
