GQEBERHA – The ISUZU D-MAX has long stood as one of South Africa’s most trusted bakkies, earning its reputation through durability, efficiency and real-world capability. For 2026, ISUZU Motors South Africa is sharpening that legacy with a wide-ranging update that touches performance, design, technology and model choice, while introducing six new derivatives to an already extensive line-up.
According to Kevin Fouché, Department Executive for Product Planning at ISUZU Motors South Africa, the latest enhancements are designed to elevate the D-MAX’s all-round capability without compromising its core strengths.
“We are building on the D-MAX’s proven reputation for exceptional efficiency, durability and reliability with a comprehensive range of mid-cycle upgrades that enhance the all-round capability, style, comfort and safety offered to our customers,” Fouché says.
At the centre of the update is the latest-generation 1.9 Ddi engine, refined for improved throttle response, stronger low-end torque delivery and better overall efficiency. While peak outputs remain at 110kW and 350Nm, the engine now delivers a significantly more accessible torque curve, with full pulling power available between 1 600 and 2 600 r/min.
Enhancements include an electronically controlled turbocharger actuator for quicker response, a new high-pressure fuel pump and revised common rail system, along with a redesigned combustion chamber and updated engine management calibration. Ceramic glow plugs further improve cold-start performance and reduce emissions.
Alongside the 1.9 Ddi improvements, the proven 3.0 Ddi engine continues to serve as the range’s more powerful option, producing 140kW and 450Nm and now extending its availability into additional model derivatives, including the X-Rider series.
A major capability boost comes in the form of Rough Terrain Mode, now standard across all 4x4 models. Working in tandem with the Traction Control System, it actively manages wheel spin through targeted braking and throttle control, directing torque to wheels with the most grip. It also allows traction control to function even when the differential lock is engaged, significantly improving performance in demanding off-road conditions.
The 2026 D-MAX also introduces a refreshed design language based on ISUZU’s Hexa Pod philosophy, giving the bakkie a more modern and assertive appearance. A sculpted bonnet, new front fascia elements and redesigned lighting signature contribute to a stronger road presence, while aerodynamic improvements help reduce drag, wind noise and improve efficiency.
New LED headlamp and daytime running light configurations, particularly on LS models and above, enhance both visibility and styling. At the rear, updated LED tail lamps, a redesigned tailgate and revised badging complete the visual transformation, reinforcing the D-MAX’s wide and muscular stance.
Six new derivatives have been added to the line-up, expanding choice across Single Cab, Extended Cab and Double Cab models. These include a new entry-level Low Ride Base Single Cab for cost-efficient commercial use, additional Extended Cab variants with expanded transmission and drivetrain options, and an extended X-Rider offering that now includes the 3.0 Ddi engine in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations.
Across Base and L specifications, equipment upgrades include an eight-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, updated instrumentation with a 4.2-inch TFT display, and improved connectivity and usability features.
LS models benefit from upgraded styling with new 17-inch alloy wheels, enhanced lighting, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, lumbar support and additional USB-C charging ports, improving both comfort and convenience for daily use and long-distance driving.
The X-Rider continues to target lifestyle-oriented buyers with its distinctive black exterior detailing, red accents and sporty interior touches, now strengthened by the availability of the more powerful 3.0 Ddi engine for added versatility.
Higher up the range, the LSE models focus on premium comfort and design, featuring upgraded interior textures, a new nine-inch infotainment system, heated front seats and steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, blending luxury with everyday usability.
At the top of the line-up, the V-CROSS introduces advanced driver assistance systems, including Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking and a suite of enhanced safety technologies supported by a next-generation stereo camera system with a wider field of view and improved detection range.
For ultimate off-road enthusiasts, the AT35 variant developed with Arctic Trucks remains the most extreme expression of the D-MAX. With widened bodywork, a suspension lift kit and 35-inch all-terrain tyres, it delivers exceptional terrain capability while retaining the comfort and technology of the V-CROSS on which it is based.
All 2026 ISUZU D-MAX models continue to be backed by a five-year warranty, service plan and roadside assistance package, reinforcing the brand’s focus on long-term dependability and ownership confidence.
With its expanded model range, refined engines and enhanced technology, the 2026 ISUZU D-MAX strengthens its position as a versatile and dependable bakkie for work, leisure and everything in between.
