A new study commissioned by BMW has revealed a sobering truth for British motorists: the average driver loses up to 565 hours of their life – more than 23 full days – to the demands of vehicle admin and maintenance planning. From service schedules to MOTs and breakdown worries, the seemingly minor tasks of car ownership are adding up to a major drain on time, mental bandwidth, and overall wellbeing.
The nationally representative poll of 2,000 drivers uncovered that motorists spend the equivalent of an entire day each year just thinking about their vehicle’s needs. For many, this time isn’t just lost—it’s actively disruptive. More than six in ten (63%) reported missing important life moments due to unexpected car issues, while on average, drivers are forced to change their plans four times a year because of undetected faults.
A Smarter Way to Drive
In response, BMW is spotlighting its Proactive Care technology—a smart, behind-the-scenes system that offers real-time support to drivers. Available on any BMW under ten years old, the intelligent service monitors vehicle data to detect issues early, remind drivers of upcoming maintenance, and even offer help after an accident.
“Time is the ultimate luxury and shouldn’t always be lost to car admin or unplanned maintenance,” says Werner Pagenstert, Customer Support Director at BMW Group UK. “Proactive Care helps drivers reclaim those 565 lost hours and spend more time doing the things that matter most to them.”
To bring this concept to life, BMW crafted a thought-provoking visual using car tyres sculpted into a sand clock on the beach—a striking reminder of just how precious time can be, and how much of it is slipping away.
The Mental Toll of Car Admin
Beyond the time impact, the emotional load is equally pressing. Nearly half of drivers (46%) say motoring admin takes up valuable headspace, with many relying on outdated systems to stay organised. Over half (52%) still use traditional diaries, while 37% delay action until a dashboard alert appears, and another 37% admit to actively putting off garage visits.
The result? A lack of peace of mind. According to the study, 68% of drivers say they would enjoy driving more if they felt more confident that their car was being properly looked after.

The Desire to Reclaim Time
This research comes against a backdrop of increasing pressure on personal time. On average, Britons spend just one-tenth of their day doing what they truly want. Asked how they’d prefer to use time reclaimed from car-related admin, a third would read more (33%), 32% would exercise, and a quarter would book a holiday.
In fact, 37% crave more holidays and getaways, and one in five admit that vacations are the only time they truly switch off from life’s constant pressures.
A Well-Timed Getaway
To underscore the benefits of Proactive Care and help drivers experience the gift of reclaimed time firsthand, BMW has launched a special partnership with the Seren Collection—a group of award-winning luxury hotels in Wales.
One lucky winner will receive a two-night stay for two, including a tasting menu experience and exclusive use of an all-electric BMW for the duration of their escape. The competition runs from 24 July to 24 August 2025, with entries open to UK drivers aged 21 and over.
As Werner Pagenstert concludes: “With so many people valuing this quality time away, we wanted to offer drivers the chance to do exactly that, whilst demonstrating the peace of mind that Proactive Care provides.”
