With many people hoping for a white Christmas we would once again like to take the opportunity to provide people with some safety tips for driving safely in snow conditions.

Here are some winter driving tips that you need to consider this winter:

  • Avoid driving while you’re fatigued. Getting the proper amount of rest before taking on winter weather tasks reduces driving risks.
  • Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
  • Make certain your tires are properly inflated.
  • Never mix radial tires with other tire types.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up.
  • If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy and snowy weather.
  • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface (wet, ice, sand).
  • Always look and steer where you want to go.
  • Use your seat belt every time you get into your vehicle.

If we have a white Christmas this year consider the following when driving in Snow conditions:

  • Always accelerate slowly in snow conditions. Do not break hard, always try to decelerate slowly to avoid skids. – Remember that your car will not stop as fast as normal in snow. You need to calculate your stopping distance differently in snow than in normal conditions.
  • It is best not to drive in Snow conditions. If you do not need to drive it is better to stay indoors.
  • Be cautious of stopping on a hill. It will be much harder to get traction on a hill.
  • Power uphill gently. Applying extra gas on snow roads might make your car wheels spin and you might lose traction.
  • In snowy conditions you should double or triple your normal following distance.
  • In snow conditions it is important to drive slowly. Make sure you have enough time to maneuver.
  • Be on the lookout for other drivers.

These are just some general guidelines you should take into consideration when driving in snow. Remember everything takes longer when driving on icy or snowy roads. If you are driving a 4×4 don’t assume that your car will act any different in Snowy conditions and that you will be safer in a 4×4 than in a 2 wheel drive.
