BYD South Africa is celebrating a significant milestone as two of its models—the Shark 6 and Dolphin Surf—have been named finalists for the prestigious 2026 South African Car of the Year (COTY) awards. This recognition highlights the vehicles’ exceptional performance, innovative technology, and growing resonance with South African drivers.
Both models now advance to the final round of judging, where a panel of expert COTY jurors will assess each vehicle across a rigorous set of criteria, including on-road performance, design innovation, energy efficiency, advanced technology, and overall driving experience. These parameters closely reflect BYD’s mission to deliver practical, sustainable mobility solutions tailored to local needs.
“Having entered the South African market in mid-2023, BYD has already secured not one but two vehicles as finalists, demonstrating our brand’s strong appeal and understanding of what the local market needs,” said Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD South Africa.
The BYD Shark 6, a bold new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) double-cab bakkie, combines rugged capability with efficiency and environmental responsibility. Engineered for adventure and robust performance, the Shark 6 showcases BYD’s commitment to sustainable innovation without compromising on power or practicality.
Meanwhile, the BYD Dolphin Surf, South Africa’s most affordable fully electric vehicle, is redefining urban mobility. Its compact, agile platform offers impressive range, intuitive smart technology, and exceptional value, making electric driving accessible to everyday South Africans.
Both models feature BYD’s Blade Battery technology, renowned for its safety and reliability, alongside advanced driver assistance systems and intuitive interfaces that set new benchmarks in the local market.
The nominations come on the back of strong customer and critical acclaim for both vehicles since their South African debut, underscoring BYD’s ability to merge advanced new-energy engineering with user-focused design. BYD continues to collaborate with key public and private partners, including Eskom and Absa, to strengthen the country’s electric vehicle infrastructure and accelerate the adoption of new-energy vehicles nationwide.
“The Shark 6 and Dolphin Surf represent our dedication to providing South Africans with reliable, efficient, and forward-thinking options that meet the demands of our diverse roads and lifestyles,” said Mark Handley, Commercial Director of BYD South Africa. “We’re excited to showcase what these vehicles can do in the final evaluation and remain committed to accelerating the country’s shift toward sustainable mobility.”
BYD South Africa continues to lead the charge in new-energy vehicles, delivering affordable, high-quality electric and hybrid options that contribute to a greener, more sustainable future. The winners of the 2026 South African Car of the Year will be announced following the completion of the evaluation process later this year.
