The European B-segment has always been a proving ground for clever packaging and even cleverer engineering. Space is tight, expectations are high, and compromise is usually part of the deal. The BYD DOLPHIN G DM-i arrives with a different attitude entirely, bringing plug-in Super Hybrid with DM technology into the supermini class and quietly reshaping what buyers might expect from a compact hatchback.
At its most effortless, the DOLPHIN G DM-i behaves like a fully electric car. Its front-mounted electric motor delivers immediate, smooth acceleration, giving city driving a calm, almost gliding character. Short daily commutes can be completed in electric mode alone, allowing drivers to experience zero-emissions travel without needing to plug into a larger EV lifestyle shift. It’s familiar in size, but distinctly modern in feel.
When the journey stretches beyond the city limits, the system shifts seamlessly into hybrid intelligence. BYD’s Super Hybrid with DM technology constantly balances energy use between electric and petrol power, optimising efficiency without asking the driver to think about it. The result is a combined range of more than 621 miles (over 1000km) from a full charge and a full tank, placing the DOLPHIN G DM-i in rare company among compact cars that can genuinely handle long-distance travel without planning anxiety.
Despite its focus on efficiency, the car does not sacrifice practicality. At 4.16 metres long and 1.825 metres wide, it sits firmly within the European supermini footprint while still prioritising usable interior space. The design intention is clear: this is a compact family car that happens to be highly efficient, not an efficiency experiment squeezed into a city-only shell.
BYD positions the DOLPHIN G DM-i as a key step in making electrified mobility more accessible across Europe’s B-segment. As Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, highlights, the goal is to redefine expectations for what a compact car can deliver in the electric era, combining long electric range, intelligent hybrid operation and everyday usability in a single package.
With European sales set to begin in the coming weeks and first deliveries expected by the end of the summer, the DOLPHIN G DM-i enters the market at a pivotal moment. Buyers are increasingly looking for flexibility without complexity, and this model leans directly into that demand. It doesn’t force a choice between electric and petrol. Instead, it blends both into a single, adaptable driving experience designed for modern European life.
