Johannesburg is once again becoming the stage for BYD Auto South Africa’s rapid-fire new energy offensive, as the brand prepares to lift the veil on its latest model. Following the successful local launch of the ATTO 8, attention now shifts to the all-new ATTO 2 DM-i, set for its official South African media and stakeholder debut on 10 and 11 June 2026.
While BYD is keeping much of the detail closely guarded until the official reveal, enough has been shared to signal the importance of this next chapter. The ATTO 2 DM-i will introduce the brand’s advanced DM-i plug-in hybrid system to the local market, a technology engineered to deliver a seamless balance between electric driving efficiency and the reassurance of long-distance internal combustion support. It is a powertrain philosophy designed for real-world versatility, particularly suited to markets where infrastructure and driving conditions demand flexibility without compromise.
At the heart of the ATTO 2 DM-i lies BYD’s Blade Battery technology, a globally recognised innovation that has become a defining pillar of the brand’s identity. Known for its structural integrity, thermal stability and efficiency, the Blade Battery continues to position BYD at the forefront of safety-focused electrification. Its inclusion in the ATTO 2 DM-i underscores the brand’s intent to deliver not just electrified mobility, but confidence in every kilometre travelled.
The timing of this introduction is no accident. BYD’s footprint in South Africa is expanding at pace, with growing consumer curiosity around new energy vehicles and an increasingly competitive SUV segment that is quickly becoming the battleground for innovation. The ATTO 2 DM-i enters this space with the promise of practicality and technological sophistication, aiming to bridge the gap between early adopters of electrification and mainstream drivers seeking everyday usability.
“The South African market has responded incredibly positively to BYD’s growing vehicle portfolio, and we are excited to continue building on that momentum with the introduction of the ATTO 2 DM-i,” says Nomonde Kweyi, Marketing Director at BYD Auto South Africa. “This is a vehicle designed for customers who want the benefits of electrified mobility without compromising on practicality, convenience or everyday usability. We look forward to sharing the full story with South Africans very soon.”
With anticipation building, several questions naturally remain at the forefront of consumer interest. What level of efficiency will the ATTO 2 DM-i ultimately deliver in real-world conditions? How will it carve out its position in an SUV market already crowded with both established players and emerging electrified rivals? And perhaps most compelling of all, what price point will BYD settle on when the final details are revealed?
For now, those answers remain under wraps. What is certain is that BYD Auto South Africa is continuing to accelerate its local strategy with intent, layering innovation upon innovation as it builds its presence in one of the continent’s most dynamic automotive markets. The countdown to 11 June 2026 has officially begun.
