BYD has secured one of the most prestigious honours in the UK automotive calendar, being named Manufacturer of the Year at the 2026 AM Awards. The recognition reflects not only its accelerating sales performance but also its growing influence in shaping the country’s transition toward electrified mobility.
The annual ceremony, hosted at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel in London, brought together key figures from across the UK automotive sector. Judges evaluated manufacturers on a wide range of criteria, including market performance, dealer relationships, product strength and responsiveness to shifting regulatory and consumer demands.
In awarding BYD the top manufacturer title, the panel highlighted the brand’s ability to move quickly and intelligently in a fast-changing market. Particular praise was directed at its product planning strategy, which has managed to balance affordability, practicality, design appeal and environmental performance in a way that resonates strongly with UK consumers.
Beyond headline sales figures, judges also emphasised BYD’s attentiveness to feedback from both retailers and customers. This responsiveness, they noted, has allowed the brand to refine its offering and strengthen its position in a highly competitive landscape where agility is often as important as scale.
The award comes during a breakthrough period for BYD in the UK. As of April 2026, the manufacturer had sold 26,396 plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles, securing a 9.5% market share. This performance has already made BYD the UK’s leading new energy vehicle manufacturer and the best-selling pure electric car brand in the country so far in 2026.
Speaking after receiving the award, Steve Beattie, Deputy Country Manager for BYD UK and Ireland, credited the achievement to the company’s growing retailer network and the dedication of its UK team. He reflected on the rapid progress made since the brand entered the UK market just three years ago, noting that sustained effort has positioned BYD at the forefront of the electric vehicle segment.
Beattie also underlined that this momentum is only the beginning. Over the next 12 months, BYD plans to expand its model line-up further while increasing accessibility through a broader retail footprint. New launches are already in the pipeline, including the ATTO 2 DM-i, with additional models expected to follow later in the year.
Adding to its expansion strategy, BYD Group’s premium brand DENZA is set to arrive in the UK during the summer, signalling a clear intent to compete across both mainstream and luxury segments of the market.
AM Editor Tim Rose described BYD as a rapidly rising force in the UK automotive industry, highlighting its clear strategic direction and strong alignment with local market needs. He noted that the brand’s combination of competitive pricing, well-specified models and growing dealer enthusiasm has made it one of the most closely watched manufacturers in the sector.
As the UK automotive landscape continues its shift toward electrification, BYD’s success story reflects a broader transformation in consumer demand and regulatory direction. With its expanding product range and increasingly confident market position, the company is no longer simply participating in the UK EV race—it is helping to define it.
