Marking 50 Years of GTI Legacy with a Nürburgring Lap Time for the History Books
Wolfsburg, Germany – June 17, 2025 – As the iconic Volkswagen Golf GTI gears up to celebrate its 50th birthday in 2026, the brand is already setting records and turning heads with the all-new Golf GTI EDITION 50 – the most powerful production GTI ever built. Ahead of its global debut on 20 June 2025 at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, the exclusive anniversary model has etched its name into the record books with a jaw-dropping lap of the Nordschleife.
Driven by Volkswagen racing driver and performance chassis specialist Benny Leuchter, the near-production Golf GTI EDITION 50 stormed around the legendary 20.8-kilometre Nürburgring circuit in 7:46.13 minutes. This makes it the fastest road-legal Volkswagen to ever conquer the “Green Hell.”
“The new Golf GTI EDITION 50 is a statement with which Volkswagen expresses the pure GTI idea – the combination of superior drive power and highly precise chassis with front-wheel drive – more effectively than ever before,” says Leuchter, following his record-breaking run.
Built for Speed, Engineered for Precision
The record-setting GTI was equipped with an optional Performance Package, which features a finely tuned performance chassis and lightweight 19-inch semi-slick Potenza Race tyres from Bridgestone. Specially developed for this model, the tyres are mounted on ultra-light forged wheels, reducing unsprung and rotational mass – a decisive edge on the Nordschleife.
This finely honed configuration gave Leuchter the edge needed to extract every bit of performance out of the front-wheel drive machine. “It’s truly impressive how easily this Volkswagen can be moved so quickly over the Nordschleife track,” he explains. “The entire set-up of the Golf GTI EDITION 50 means you can drive the ideal line of the Nordschleife with high precision.”
In the face of challenging weather and the unforgiving terrain of the Nürburgring, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 remained composed, stable, and blisteringly fast. “The aplomb with which it masters the peculiarities of the legendary Nordschleife is cool,” says Leuchter. “The GTI is instantly stable over the entire 20.8 kilometres.”

Record-Breaking Pedigree
This new milestone adds another chapter to Volkswagen’s proud Nürburgring history. Nearly a decade ago, Leuchter set a benchmark lap of 07:49.21 in a Golf GTI Clubsport S – a record at the time for VW’s front-wheel drive vehicles. In 2022, he went even quicker in an all-wheel drive Golf R 20 Years, clocking in at 07:47.31.
But the Golf GTI EDITION 50 has now gone one better – despite being front-wheel drive – and under less-than-ideal weather conditions. With an on-board camera lap time of 07:41.27 (excluding the additional 200 metres between start and finish lines at grandstand T13), it dramatically outpaces even the Golf R, a feat few believed possible.
“Three years ago, I wouldn’t have thought that I could ever beat the lap time of the outstanding Golf R with a front-wheel drive GTI as clearly as I have now,” Leuchter admits. “The fact that this has now happened actually says everything about the successful set-up and extraordinary potential of this GTI.”
Looking Ahead
Though the market launch of the Golf GTI EDITION 50 is scheduled for 2026, the car will continue to make waves ahead of time – both on and off the track. Until customer orders begin, the model will be classified in the “Pre-Series Models” category on the official Nürburgring leaderboard.
With its sharp dynamics, motorsport-derived enhancements, and a legacy five decades strong, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 stands not just as a celebration of heritage – but as a declaration of performance intent for the next generation.
The Golf GTI EDITION 50 will be unveiled in full on 20 June 2025 at the Nürburgring, ahead of the iconic 24-hour endurance race. More details, including specifications and market availability, will be revealed at the premiere event.
