Volkswagen is marking a half-century of its iconic GTI legacy with a spectacular one-off model: the Golf GTI EDITION 50. This special anniversary edition, arriving in UK showrooms on 15 January, is the most powerful production Golf GTI ever built, blending breathtaking performance with unmistakable style.
Priced at £47,995 (OTR, including VAT), the GTI EDITION 50 is a limited-run celebration, with production confined to 2026 to coincide with the brand’s 50th GTI anniversary. Enthusiasts can expect strong demand as order books open.
Built to Perform and Impress
Under the bonnet, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 houses a 2.0 TSI engine paired with a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, delivering 325 PS and 420 Nm of torque. This allows the hatch to sprint from 0-62 mph in just 5.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 168 mph where legal.
Upgraded suspension and chassis components ensure that the power translates into razor-sharp handling, while Volkswagen’s adaptive chassis control balances performance with everyday comfort. The car sits 15 mm lower than a standard Golf GTI and weighs in at 1,930 kg—comparable to the Golf GTI Clubsport.
For track enthusiasts, the optional Performance Package offers further refinement, including semi-slick tyres, forged 19-inch black alloy wheels, a twin Akrapovič exhaust system, and lowered suspension. Special drive modes also enhance the experience, with Nürburgring and S+ modes for track-focused performance, plus M+ mode to optimize gear control at high revs.
A Design That Commands Attention
The GTI EDITION 50 is as striking as it is fast. Standard design features include pure white paintwork with contrasting black roof and mirrors, while an exclusive Dark Moss green metallic paint option is also available. Red-glazed 19-inch Queenstown alloy wheels, GTI 50 badges, red-accented pedals and seatbelts, and exclusive seat trims all contribute to a commanding presence that celebrates the GTI’s heritage.
Making History at the Nürburgring
Performance isn’t just theoretical. The GTI EDITION 50 has already carved its place in history, with racing driver Benny Leuchter completing a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in June 2025 in just seven minutes 46.13 seconds. This represents the fastest lap ever for a road-approved Volkswagen, achieved in challenging wet conditions using the optional Performance Package.
“The Golf GTI EDITION 50 expresses the pure GTI idea—combining immense drive power with highly precise front-wheel-drive chassis—better than ever before,” said Leuchter after the record-breaking drive.
With its mix of record-breaking performance, track-ready dynamics, and eye-catching design, the Golf GTI EDITION 50 is more than a car—it’s a celebration of 50 years of GTI passion. For Volkswagen enthusiasts, it’s the ultimate collector’s piece and a fitting tribute to a legend in the hatchback world.
