Milton Keynes, UK – 23 September 2025 – Tool theft is increasingly threatening the livelihoods of UK tradespeople, with a new survey from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles revealing a sharp rise in incidents and the financial damage they cause. More than one in four (28%) UK van drivers were victims of tool theft in 2024, up from 19% the year before.
The financial toll is climbing just as steeply. The average value of stolen tools surged by over 40%, reaching £2,433 last year. Alarming new figures show that over a quarter (27%) of theft incidents involved losses of £3,500 or more, a dramatic increase compared with just 10% in 2023. In total, UK businesses were hit with an estimated £3.5 billion in stolen equipment in 2024.
Lost Days, Lost Income
The repercussions go well beyond the cost of replacing stolen tools. The majority of victims (86%) faced unexpected downtime while restocking equipment and repairing vehicle locks. On average, van drivers were forced to take nearly four days (3.97) off work – double the 1.9 days recorded in 2023. For one in five respondents, the disruption stretched to more than a week.
This escalating problem arrives at a particularly challenging moment. With 36% of survey respondents citing the cost-of-living crisis as a key work-related stressor, the burden of theft compounds an already difficult economic climate. Victims can also face higher insurance premiums, further stretching tight margins.

Volkswagen’s Safety and Security Response
Recognising the growing threat, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles continues to focus on helping van drivers safeguard their livelihoods. The New Transporter recently earned the Euro NCAP Platinum Award for its outstanding safety engineering, and is available with an array of optional anti-theft features designed to deter criminals.
These include a comprehensive anti-theft alarm system with interior monitoring, back-up horn and towing protection. When activated, the system automatically sounds the horn and flashes the hazard lights, drawing immediate attention and discouraging further intrusion.
John Ricardo-Neto, Head of Product Planning at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, commented:
“Tool theft remains a huge issue for van drivers and businesses in the UK, and it’s concerning to see the number of incidences and the scale of their impact continuing to rise. We encourage van drivers to take extra precautions – via our theft prevention technologies, ensuring tools are always well secured and vehicles parked in well-lit, CCTV-monitored areas – so that tradespeople can focus on what really matters.”
Protecting Tradespeople’s Tools – and Futures
As UK businesses face billions in losses and tradespeople struggle with growing financial pressures, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles highlights that proactive security measures—from vehicle technology to careful parking choices—are essential to protect both tools and income.
