INEOS Automotive has partnered with Antarctic luxury expedition specialist White Desert to deploy the INEOS Grenadier in one of the most remote and unforgiving environments on Earth. The collaboration will see the rugged 4x4 supporting expedition logistics and guest transfers across the ice during operations at Wolf’s Fang Runway.
Under the partnership, a fleet consisting of four Grenadier station wagons and a single Grenadier Quartermaster pick-up has been transported to Antarctica, where the vehicles will operate between Wolf’s Fang Runway and Echo Base. The route cuts through a landscape defined by extreme cold, unpredictable weather patterns and hidden crevasses, presenting a stern test for any vehicle operating on the continent.
The journey to the ice began in Cape Town, where the vehicles were loaded aboard the research and supply vessel SA Agulhas II. After sailing south across the Southern Ocean, the Grenadiers were craned directly onto the Antarctic ice shelf before beginning the inland traverse to White Desert’s operational base. Notably, the vehicles are running in factory-standard form, relying on the Grenadier’s inherent off-road capability and durability rather than specialised modifications.
Once fully operational, the vehicles will play a vital role in supporting White Desert’s on-ice infrastructure, handling logistics between camp and runway while also transporting guests safely and comfortably across the frozen terrain. In an environment where temperatures plunge well below freezing and conditions can change within minutes, reliability is not a luxury but a necessity.
The partnership reflects a shared philosophy between the two organisations. For both INEOS Automotive and White Desert, equipment must function flawlessly in environments where mechanical failure is simply not an option. White Desert has been operating luxury expeditions in Antarctica for more than two decades, and its operational model depends on carefully selected equipment capable of performing under the harshest conditions.
“We don’t bring anything into Antarctica unless it earns its place,” said Patrick Woodhead, founder and CEO of White Desert. “The Grenadier has shown it can be trusted in extreme conditions, while still offering the kind of comfort that makes long days on the ice sustainable.”
As part of the collaboration, INEOS Automotive and White Desert are producing a short film series that will document the arrival, testing and real-world use of the Grenadier in Antarctica. The opening chapter captures the dramatic moment the vehicles are lifted from the SA Agulhas II and lowered onto the Antarctic ice shelf, marking the beginning of their operational role on the continent.
The film series aims to provide a rare behind-the-scenes look at logistics in Antarctica, highlighting the challenges of operating vehicles in one of the planet’s most extreme environments while showcasing the Grenadier’s capability in real-world expedition conditions.
Lynn Calder, CEO of INEOS Automotive, said the deployment demonstrates the engineering intent behind the vehicle. “It’s testament to our engineering and manufacturing teams that White Desert has put its faith in the Grenadier. It was designed and built precisely for the thrill of adventures and expeditions in the most remote places on the planet.”
Although the vehicles have already arrived on the continent, the partnership will be formally activated during the upcoming Antarctic expedition season. Additional chapters of the film series documenting the Grenadier’s work on the ice will be released over the coming months.
