An expanded recommissioning programme is set to redefine the way enthusiasts experience some of the most coveted rally-bred machines of the 1980s. UK-based specialist Tolman Engineering has successfully brought new life to two legendary homologation specials – the Ford RS200 and Peugeot 205 T16 – in 2025, and is preparing to extend its expertise to other historic models with a new suite of upgraded parts and services.
Reawakening a Golden Era
For motorsport purists, the Group B rally era remains one of the most celebrated – and controversial – chapters in automotive history. Between 1982 and 1986, the category’s famously liberal regulations pushed manufacturers to the edge of innovation, resulting in machines of staggering performance and presence. To compete, carmakers had to produce 200 road-going examples, giving birth to vehicles such as the RS200, 205 T16, Lancia Delta S4, MG Metro 6R4 and Renault 5 Turbo.
Yet, these homologation specials were often raw, compromised and unreliable. Manufacturers prioritised lightweight construction and rally-winning capability over durability and refinement, leaving road cars that could be as temperamental as they were exciting. Following the ban of Group B in 1986, many of these cars were stripped, converted for other disciplines, or left languishing with dwindling support and unobtainable parts.
Tolman’s New Chapter
Building on the acclaim of its Tolman Edition programme, which reimagines modern classics with subtle engineering upgrades, Tolman Engineering has now turned its attention to keeping these rare Group B derivatives not just preserved, but genuinely drivable.
Earlier this year, the team completed the recommissioning of an exceptionally low-mileage Ford RS200, followed by the restoration of a Peugeot 205 T16 – the latter scheduled for public display at Hagerty’s Club House during Bicester Heritage’s October Scramble on 5 October. Next in line is a Renault 5 Turbo 2, which arrives at Tolman’s Warwickshire base this autumn.
At the heart of the service is a commitment to preservation through use. Rather than consigning these icons to static collections, Tolman’s approach encourages owners to rediscover the visceral thrill of driving them as intended.

New Parts, New Confidence
To support this philosophy, Tolman has developed the first new components specifically tailored to Group B homologation cars.
- For the Peugeot 205 T16, the company has engineered a bespoke cambelt timing and pulley kit, front anti-roll bar bushes, and precision CNC-formed coolant pipes.
- For the Ford RS200, an ECU upgrade has been introduced, enhancing both reliability and drivability.
In addition, Tolman rebuilt the 205 T16’s transmission in-house, sourcing original factory stock ratios from contacts in France, while its trusted suppliers provided rebuilt dampers and factory-correct Michelin 210 5.5 R 390 TRX tyres.
These carefully considered upgrades not only restore confidence but also heighten driving enjoyment, bringing the experience closer to the spirit of their competition counterparts.
“Cars Were Meant to be Driven”
Chris Tolman, founder of Tolman Engineering, stresses the risks of leaving such cars unused:
“Even with the best intentions, not exercising a car – especially those increasing in value – can lead to more headaches. Rubber components, seals and fuel lines deteriorate, and the scarcity of parts means replacements might already be past their intended lifespan. When properly sorted, though, these cars deliver a truly rewarding experience. Just like our Tolman Editions, we want owners to experience them as they were meant to be – thrilling, engaging and alive.”
Beyond Group B
While Group B homologation specials remain the core focus, Tolman’s reputation for non-invasive enhancements and contemporary engineering is attracting attention from wider corners of the classic motorsport world. Projects already lined up for 2025 include a Group A Mitsubishi Lancer and a historic MGB rally car, demonstrating the versatility of Tolman’s approach.
“We can apply our knowledge to pretty much any model to dial up the driving experience, reliability and performance,” adds Tolman. “Knowing your car is properly sorted can transform your feelings and enthusiasm to get out and use it.”
Reviving Legends for the Road
With the recommissioning of the RS200 and 205 T16, Tolman Engineering has set a new benchmark for how rare competition-derived cars can be preserved. By creating replacement parts, rebuilding critical components, and delivering modern reliability without compromising authenticity, Tolman is ensuring that these icons are not merely admired in showrooms but lived and experienced on the road – as they were always meant to be.
