AMSTERDAM, April 3, 2024 – The latest findings from a survey by YouGov, in partnership with the Freedom of Mobility Forum, unveiled significant reluctance among people globally to shift towards environmentally friendly transportation options. Presented at the forum’s second annual meeting, these insights fuel critical discussions on adapting global mobility for a burgeoning world population.
Spanning across five nations, the survey sheds light on the public’s current stance on green transportation, signaling a pivotal moment in the worldwide move towards sustainability in mobility.

Key Highlights:
- Around 25% of people worldwide are hesitant to adopt sustainable transport methods, with this sentiment more prevalent in the rural U.S., where over half of the respondents are resistant to change.
- Although a majority shows a willingness to consider eco-friendly transportation, only a small fraction (less than 10%) have made significant strides in altering their travel habits.
- The readiness to forgo solo journeys for shared or public transport is notable, with 60% of participants indicating openness. This eagerness is particularly strong in countries like India, Brazil, and Morocco, while more developed regions and rural areas in the U.S. show less enthusiasm, often due to a scarcity of mass transit options.
- The responsibility for driving the shift towards green transport is widely attributed to government officials and the general populace, with businesses seen as playing a secondary role, except in the U.S.
- The younger generation is identified as a crucial force in promoting eco-friendly travel, with a quarter of respondents globally—and 40% in India—believing in their potential to lead significant change.
Alexandre Devineau, General Manager at YouGov, emphasized, “The younger demographic is expected to be at the forefront of the shift towards greener transport. However, their impact needs to manifest through more decisive actions to tackle the mobility challenges on a global scale.”
Survey Methodology:
Conducted in January 2024, the survey engaged approximately 5,095 individuals from Brazil, France, India, Morocco, and the United States, ensuring a demographic representation consistent with each nation’s population aged 18 and above. The questionnaire centered around three pivotal questions reflecting the Freedom of Mobility Forum’s discussion themes.
The Freedom of Mobility Forum, created by Stellantis, serves as an inclusive platform for exploring the future of mobility in light of the planet’s constraints, focusing on technological, business, and lifestyle transformations.
