The spirit of legendary British comedian Rik Mayall roared back to life in June this year, as thousands of fans descended upon his hometown of Droitwich Spa for the inaugural Rik Mayall Comedy Festival — a week-long celebration of an anarchic genius whose influence on comedy still reverberates across generations.
Now, just months after its resounding debut, the festival is a finalist for Best Festival & Event in the Visit Worcestershire Tourism Awards 2025 — a remarkable accolade for an event in its first year. With public voting now open and the winner to be announced in March 2026, the festival stands as a powerful tribute to Mayall’s life, career, and irrepressible legacy.
An Unforgettable Week of Laughs and Legacy
Taking place from 31 May to 7 June 2025, the festival welcomed over 10,000 attendees from across the UK and beyond, converging on Droitwich Spa to honour the much-loved star of Bottom, The Young Ones, The New Statesman, and Drop Dead Fred. With more than 200 events hosted across 30+ venues, the festival showcased a diverse programme including stand-up gigs, street performances, film screenings, comedy workshops, a pop-up museum, and a fringe lineup that rivalled more established events.
The beating heart of the festival was the Norbury Theatre, where Mayall once performed in his early career. The volunteer-run venue hosted headline acts such as Greg Davies, Peter Richardson, and Helen Lederer, with over 75% of shows selling out — a testament to the appetite for high-calibre comedy and authentic homage.
More Than a Festival — A Movement of Memory and Meaning
While the laughter was loud, the festival’s emotional depth set it apart. The Memories of Rik installation — featuring over 500 handwritten tributes — gave fans a space to share heartfelt stories of how Rik Mayall’s work helped them through grief, loneliness, or difficult times. These candid expressions of connection made it clear that the event was far more than just a celebration; it was a deeply meaningful act of collective remembrance.
This emotional resonance aligned closely with the values of headline sponsor Isuzu UK, whose ongoing commitment to men’s mental health formed a fitting partnership. Through its #SideBySide campaign, Isuzu has long championed conversations around emotional well-being, camaraderie, and the power of openness — principles that ran through the very fabric of the Rik Mayall Comedy Festival.
As George Wallis, Head of Marketing at Isuzu UK, aptly quipped:
“There was no fear of the festival Bottom-ing out with the fantastic acts on display. It was a full-scale Rik ‘n’ Lol celebration of British comedy brilliance.”
The automotive brand also played a practical role, supplying Isuzu D-Max pick-ups to support the festival’s logistical demands — an apt show of solidarity and utility, echoing the brand’s mantra of standing side-by-side with communities.

Community-Driven Success
Behind the festival’s success was a passionate collective of over 60 volunteers and a small, committed festival committee. Their dedication and attention to detail were not only felt in the smooth execution of over 200 events, but also in the overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees. Many festival-goers drew favourable comparisons with other iconic UK comedy festivals, citing the warmth, energy, and authenticity of the experience.
Festival Director Stuart Panrucker reflected on the achievement:
“It has been a privilege to organise the inaugural Rik Mayall Comedy Festival, and we’re absolutely thrilled to be a finalist in the Visit Worcestershire Tourism Awards. The festival was only possible through the support of our main sponsor Isuzu, our other amazing sponsors, our community partners, and the hard work of our dedicated volunteers.”
A Vote for Comedy, Community, and Rik’s Enduring Legacy
The festival’s shortlisting for Best Festival & Event is not only a nod to a successful debut, but a recognition of its wider cultural and emotional impact. Voting is now open to the public, giving fans and attendees alike the chance to help crown this extraordinary celebration a rightful winner.
Whether you laughed until you cried, discovered new comedic talent, or penned a postcard in memory of a comedy legend, the Rik Mayall Comedy Festival offered something deeply personal to everyone who walked through its doors.
And with a little public support, the festival’s next act could be its biggest encore yet.
