Nissan Sunderland, a cornerstone of automotive excellence, has a new face at the helm of its production team. Lee Watson, a lifelong resident of Wearside and a seasoned Nissan veteran, has been appointed as the plant’s new Production Director. Watson’s promotion is a testament not only to his personal achievements but also to the broader narrative of local talent and dedication that defines Nissan Sunderland.
Lee Watson’s connection to the Sunderland plant runs deep. His early memories include watching his father take his uncle for an interview at the plant before it even broke ground. Watson’s father secured the job and dedicated 30 years to the company, a legacy of loyalty and hard work that Lee has carried forward. “Like many people, I can remember when Nissan first came to Sunderland,” Watson recalls. His personal history with the plant began in 1999, when he joined the manufacturing team in the Unit shop, building engines. Over the years, Watson has progressed through various roles, including a significant stint in Trim and Chassis, where he worked on the Nissan Primera.
Watson’s career trajectory reflects his unwavering commitment to Nissan and its products. He has played a role in the development of landmark vehicles such as the 100% electric Nissan LEAF and the record-breaking Nissan Qashqai. His new role as Production Director will see him leading a team of over 3,000, a responsibility he embraces with great pride. “I’m incredibly proud to be taking over as Production Director,” Watson says. “Both my grandads were shipbuilders, so it’s great to be carrying on the manufacturing tradition.”

The Sunderland plant is not just a site of production but a symbol of Nissan’s broader ambitions. With new models like the Juke and Qashqai scheduled to go into production in 2024, the plant is poised for a period of significant activity and innovation. Central to this future is the EV36Zero project, which aims to integrate electric vehicle and battery manufacturing with renewable energy initiatives, driving towards zero emissions both in production and on the road.
Watson’s appointment also highlights the plant’s tradition of nurturing talent from within. Thirteen members of the plant’s senior leadership team began their careers at Nissan, a testament to the company’s commitment to fostering growth and opportunity. “It’s proof that at Nissan if you work hard, learn, and put the team first, there are opportunities to progress,” Watson notes.
As Nissan Sunderland continues to evolve, Lee Watson is set to lead the charge towards a sustainable future, combining cutting-edge technology with the enduring values of craftsmanship and teamwork. “Sunderland is at the heart of Nissan’s drive to a sustainable future. I’m looking forward to the challenges and exciting changes that will bring,” Watson concludes.
