Johannesburg, 27 October 2025 – In South Africa, a car is more than just a mode of transport—it’s a lifeline. For many, it’s how they commute to work, take their children to school, or keep small businesses running, particularly in areas where public transport falls short. Yet, misconceptions about vehicle servicing and maintenance can put drivers, passengers, and other road users at risk.

The National Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA) is shedding light on some of the most common car-servicing myths and the truths behind them, helping motorists protect their vehicles, their families, and their wallets.

Keeping south african roads safer nada debunks common car servicing myths

Myth 1: “I don’t need to service my car once the warranty ends.”

The truth: Regular servicing remains essential, long after the warranty expires.
Why it matters: Maintaining your vehicle ensures its safety, reliability, and resale value. Skipping services might save money in the short term, but the costs of repairing major issues later often far exceed routine maintenance expenses.

Myth 2: “Anyone can service my car. It’s all the same.”

The truth: Modern cars are far more complex than ever—they’re more like laptops on wheels than simple machines.
Why it matters: Skilled technicians trained on your specific make and model ensure your vehicle runs smoothly, protecting both your investment and your safety. Incorrect servicing can compromise performance, reliability, and, in some cases, even safety systems.

Myth 3: “Skipping one service won’t hurt.”

The truth: Even a single missed service can create hidden damage and safety risks.
Why it matters: Regular maintenance identifies and prevents issues before they escalate. It’s not just about keeping the engine running—it’s about safeguarding you, your passengers, and everyone else on the road.

Myth 4: “Tyres only need changing when they look worn.”

The truth: Tyres can become unsafe long before visible wear appears.
Why it matters: Tyres have minimum tread requirements and an expiry date, and proactive checks by knowledgeable professionals prevent accidents. Proper tyre maintenance is critical for safe braking, steering, and overall vehicle control.

Myth 5: “Dashboard warning lights can wait.”

The truth: Ignoring warning lights can turn minor issues into major safety hazards.
Why it matters: Dashboard alerts are designed to notify drivers of critical concerns. Prompt attention from trained technicians can prevent costly repairs and, more importantly, protect the lives of everyone in the vehicle.

Consumers are understandably mindful of costs, but NADA warns that neglecting regular maintenance can quickly escalate into safety issues. Keeping your car roadworthy isn’t just about preserving the vehicle—it’s about protecting the people who rely on it every day. Even small oversights can have serious consequences.

Modern vehicles are sophisticated machines, and maintaining their safety and reliability requires the right knowledge and experience. NADA members, through their extensive networks, offer expert guidance to help drivers care for their cars effectively, ensuring that every journey is safe, reliable, and trouble-free.

As part of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), NADA encourages all motorists to take a proactive approach to vehicle health, reinforcing good maintenance habits and safeguarding South Africa’s roads for everyone.
