Parys, Free State – A motorsport showdown like no other is about to descend on the historic town of Parys as the South African Rally-Raid Championship (SARRC) gears up for a high-stakes, double-header event on 15 and 16 August. Featuring both the INGCO Parys 400 and INGCO Vaal 400, the weekend promises nearly 800 km of terrain-busting action, drawing top teams, national title contenders, and thousands of fans to the heart of the Free State.
“This is our second venue out of five this season – and it’s a double-header, which makes it absolutely pivotal in the title race,” says Archie Rutherford, CEO of SA Rally-Raid. “Reducing the series to six rounds due to earlier weather disruptions means every race counts more than ever – and this weekend could be a turning point for the championship.”
Two Races. Two Days. One Epic Challenge.
Motorsport purists and thrill-seekers alike are in for a treat. Held at the Stonehenge River Lodge, which doubles as Race HQ and the Designated Service Park (DSP), the INGCO Parys 400 on Friday and INGCO Vaal 400 on Saturday will put drivers, machines, and teams through a punishing test of pace, precision and endurance.
- Friday, 15 August – INGCO Parys 400: The weekend kicks off with the Falken Wild Peak prologue at 08:00, setting the starting order for two challenging stages totalling around 350 km of technical terrain.
- Saturday, 16 August – INGCO Vaal 400: The tempo intensifies with another qualifier at 08:00, followed by two longer and more demanding racing sections, covering approximately 425 km.
With just one night to service and reset vehicles between races, teams are being forced into a Dakar-style endurance mindset, balancing outright speed with strategic preservation.
“These back-to-back races are a mental and physical battle,” says Rutherford. “You’ve got to be fast on both days, but smart too – if the car doesn’t make it through Friday, you’re out of contention on Saturday. It’s full send, but with a tactical edge.”
The Title Race Tightens: Top Contenders to Watch
Among the championship front-runners lining up in Parys are a mix of seasoned pros and rising stars:
- Saood Variawa and Guy Botterill (Toyota Gazoo Racing)
- Gareth Woolridge (Castrol Neil Woolridge Motorsport Ford Rally-Raid Team)
- Giniel de Villiers and Fouché Blignaut (Team Hilux)
Toyota’s Variawa, recently back from a strong performance in Spain, is bullish about his chances. “We’ve made a lot of progress since the last race and done plenty of development, so we’re aiming to come out strong. The cars are in great shape and we’re feeling confident.”
Botterill, another Gazoo Racing contender, is equally motivated. “Parys is a fantastic town – a proper farming community – and the event is always well supported. Navigation will be tricky, but we’re hungry for points and coming in with good momentum after our international win.”
Ford’s Woolridge, piloting the upgraded NWM Evo Plus, sees the double-header as a potential game-changer. “Parys can be fast and flowing, but it’s also tight in places, which makes it an exciting challenge. This round could be a real championship decider – and we’re ready to fight for the front.”

Not Just a Race – A Festival of Speed and Local Support
Beyond the adrenaline and championship drama, the Parys Rally-Raid weekend is also a major boon for local tourism. With 600 to 800 team members and officials arriving in town, not to mention waves of spectators, the economic injection into local restaurants, guest houses and businesses is substantial.
“Parys is a brilliant venue – not just because of the terrain, but also because it’s close enough to Johannesburg to make travel easy for teams and accessible for fans,” says Rutherford. “We bring the big circus to town – and everyone benefits.”
For fans wanting a premium experience, VIP packages are available, offering exclusive hospitality, behind-the-scenes access, and front-row views of some of the most spectacular rally-raid action in the country.
Powering the Action: Partnerships that Drive Success
A weekend of this calibre wouldn’t be possible without the support of title sponsor INGCO, an internationally renowned brand in the power tool and equipment space, as well as key partners including Ford, Icam, Falken Tyres and Team Hilux.
“These events take immense coordination and resources,” Rutherford adds. “We’re incredibly grateful to our sponsors for helping make South African rally-raid one of the most competitive and exciting championships in the world.”
The Road Ahead
With just a handful of rounds remaining in the 2025 SARRC season, the INGCO Parys and Vaal 400 double-header could dramatically reshape the title landscape.
“One thing is for sure,” says Rutherford. “Fans can expect fireworks from the championship favourites – all pushing for podiums, points, and momentum. Two races in two days push every team to their absolute limits – physically, mentally and mechanically. But it’s in these moments that legends are made. This is rally-raid at its fiercest.”
