One of the most iconic and influential cars of the 80s, a 1989 Audi UR Quattro 2.2 Turbo RR 20V, renowned for its pedigree and provenance, is poised to be a star attraction at H&H Classics’ next classic car auction on July 24.
This extraordinary vehicle, one of only four UK press cars, has recently undergone an extensive mechanical and cosmetic overhaul over the past five years. Expected to fetch between £40,000 and £45,000, this Quattro remains a highly sought-after gem among performance car enthusiasts.
“Thanks to their motorsport success and technological advancements, Audi Quattros are widely admired and continue to be in high demand among performance enthusiasts worldwide,” remarks Lucas Gomersall, motor car specialist at H&H Classics. “However, with replacement parts now difficult to find, few examples are in such pristine condition as this particular model. Additionally, its factory press car heritage makes this a rare opportunity to own a true 80s icon.”
Distinguished as one of the four UK press cars by their consecutive registration plates, this particular Quattro was featured in a head-to-head test with a Lancia Delta Integrale in the February 1990 issue of Fast Lane magazine. The journalist praised the vehicle’s performance, stating, “On the move, the 20V Quattro is nothing short of astonishing; it offers breathtaking performance… In short, you simply never get held up for long in this car, even on England’s overcrowded roads.”

The car’s current owner has invested significantly in its rejuvenation. Utilizing parts from a pair of donor Audi Coupes and another RR 20V Quattro for its engine, the vehicle now boasts a Turbo Dynamics MD147KKK turbocharger, three-nozzle injectors, and a Scorpion exhaust, resulting in an estimated 300 bhp. To manage this power, a new clutch has been installed, and Brembo callipers have been added to the front wheels for enhanced braking performance.
In addition to its mechanical upgrades, the car’s bodywork has been meticulously restored. This includes new front wings and a repaint in its original and iconic Tornado Red color, reversing a previous owner’s change to black.
“This car will undoubtedly make a great addition to any collection of 1980s performance models, so we expect significant interest when it is offered on July 24,” concludes Gomersall.
Quattro enthusiasts can view and inspect the car in person from midday on July 23 at the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, ahead of the auction, which commences at 1 pm the following day.
