Volvo Cars has officially opened the order books for the 2026 Volvo EX90, unveiling a suite of cutting-edge hardware and software upgrades that sharpen the all-electric flagship’s performance, safety and everyday usability. At the heart of these updates is Volvo’s new 800-volt electric architecture, enabling faster charging and improved efficiency, while an upgraded core computer delivers the kind of processing power that paves the way for next-generation safety and driver assistance.
Next-Level Safety, Driven by AI
Central to the 2026 EX90’s evolution is a leap in computing muscle. The dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin-based core computer now delivers an extraordinary 500 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This high-performance platform allows Volvo Cars to harness artificial intelligence, data and software to further refine the EX90’s already class-leading safety credentials.
The enhanced system powers a suite of connected safety alerts that keep drivers informed of slippery road conditions, hazards ahead and even accidents further along the route. It also integrates automatic e-call functionality with Emergency Stop Assist (ESA)—a potentially life-saving feature designed to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop in its lane if the driver fails to respond to attention or hands-off warnings, for example in the event of sudden illness. Once stationary, the car’s e-call feature will automatically connect to a Volvo-linked emergency call centre, which can communicate with the occupants and contact emergency services if required.*
Other key additions include expanded automatic emergency steering that works even in darkness and a new Park Pilot assist for effortless parallel parking. Importantly, Volvo is extending the technology upgrade to existing customers: owners of the 2025 EX90 will receive a one-time free core computer upgrade during a scheduled workshop visit.
“The additional computing power enables us to harness the power of AI, data and software to further enhance safety and overall performance of the EX90,” says Anders Bell, chief technology & engineering officer at Volvo Cars. “This means we can provide our customers with advanced safety and driver support features, along with continuous improvements to the infotainment and battery management systems – all delivered seamlessly over the air.”

Faster Charging, Greater Efficiency
Volvo’s shift from a 400-volt to an 800-volt electric system marks a major milestone in the EX90’s powertrain development. The high-voltage architecture reduces heat generation during rapid charging, allowing the vehicle to recharge more quickly and more efficiently.
Working in tandem with Volvo’s in-house developed battery management software, the 800-volt system uses a smart algorithm to optimise charging performance. Under ideal conditions, it can add up to 250 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes at a 350 kW charging station.**
Beyond charging speed, the 800-volt technology delivers higher power output for stronger acceleration, while using energy more efficiently. The design also requires fewer materials, helping reduce the overall weight of the battery and electric motors.
“The EX90 now features our most advanced electric system, delivering faster charging and higher efficiency, so you can feel more confident and in control,” says Bell.
Sophisticated New Touches
The 2026 EX90 also gains an electrochromic panoramic roof, first introduced on the recently launched Volvo ES90. This innovative glass roof allows occupants to adjust transparency at the touch of a button, reducing glare or enhancing privacy to suit every journey.
Raising the Benchmark for Volvo’s Electric Flagship
With its advanced computing power, expanded safety toolkit and faster, more efficient charging, the 2026 Volvo EX90 reinforces Volvo Cars’ commitment to safety and sustainable mobility. Existing EX90 owners benefit as well, with the free computer upgrade ensuring the brand’s flagship SUV continues to evolve beyond its launch specification.
These enhancements represent some of the most significant advancements in the EX90 line-up to date. For the full list of updates and to place an order, visit the EX90 model page on volvocars.com.
