Volvo Cars continues to lead the charge in automotive safety, with its fully electric EX90 SUV earning the maximum five-star rating in the latest Euro NCAP safety assessments. Recognised as one of the highest-performing vehicles in 2025, the EX90 excels in both adult and child protection, underscoring Volvo’s longstanding commitment to real-world safety.
“Volvo Cars has long been a pioneer in automotive safety, and the EX90 is the latest example of that leadership,” says Åsa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “It builds on more than 55 years of real-world crash research, informing how we design our cars for traffic situations people face every day – not just controlled test environments. This Euro NCAP result shows that our commitment to real-world protection translates into top performance in independent safety tests.”
Drawing on data from over 50,000 real-life accidents involving more than 80,000 people, Volvo Cars combines virtual and physical testing to develop cutting-edge safety innovations. This extensive research forms the backbone of the Volvo Cars Safety Standard – an in-house benchmark that surpasses conventional testing requirements to ensure maximum protection.
Born smart, connected, and electric, the EX90 is equipped with an array of protective and preventive technologies. Advanced sensors, cameras, and radars feed its core computing system, enabling real-time data processing, adaptive learning, and over-the-air software updates that continuously enhance the vehicle’s safety capabilities.
Central to the EX90’s safety philosophy is Volvo Cars’ Safe Space Technology. This bespoke suite of systems works in unison to protect those in and around the car, helping anticipate and mitigate potential risks. In the event of a collision, the SUV’s state-of-the-art restraint systems and structural design are engineered to safeguard occupants, reflecting Volvo’s decades of safety expertise.
Standout features include the driver understanding system, named one of TIME’s Best Inventions in 2024. This technology monitors the driver’s condition, offering support if fatigue, distraction, or other factors compromise driving ability. Complementing this is full-cabin occupant sensing, which ensures no passenger is left behind in potentially dangerous situations – advanced radars can even detect subtle movements such as a baby’s breathing.
The EX90’s five-star Euro NCAP rating adds to its growing list of accolades, including the prestigious World Luxury Car award earlier this year. With this recognition, Volvo Cars reinforces its promise to deliver SUVs that not only embody luxury and innovation but also set the benchmark for safety on the road.
