In 2025, Volvo will introduce its flagship all-electric SUV, the EX90, to the South African market, heralding a new era of electrified luxury. With a commitment to safety, performance, and sustainability, the EX90 promises to be the safest and most advanced vehicle ever crafted by Volvo.
A Leap in Safety Innovation
At the heart of the EX90 lies Volvo’s groundbreaking invisible safety shield, a system that sets new standards in automotive safety. Incorporating advanced sensing technology—including cameras, radar, and LiDAR—the EX90 can detect and respond to potential hazards with unparalleled precision. This integrated system works in harmony with the vehicle’s cutting-edge onboard computers, powered by Volvo’s proprietary software and NVIDIA DRIVE technology. The result is a vehicle that not only protects its occupants but also ensures the safety of other road users, making it a true pioneer in the realm of automotive safety.
A New Standard for Electric Performance
Built on Volvo’s state-of-the-art SPA2 platform, the EX90 stands as a testament to the brand’s dedication to electrification. In its Twin Motor Performance configuration, it delivers an astonishing 380 kW of power and 910 N.m of torque, resulting in a refined and powerful performance. This incredible capability enables the EX90 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, ensuring smooth and effortless power at every turn.
Felipe Yagi, Head of Marketing & Communications at Volvo Car South Africa, is confident the EX90 will appeal to those in search of a luxury family SUV that doesn’t compromise on the electric experience. “The EX90 has already made a strong impression internationally, and we’re thrilled to see it debut on South African roads. With its cutting-edge safety features and luxurious interior, the EX90 embodies the essence of a flagship Volvo, redefining perceptions of electrified luxury,” Yagi explains.

Range Anxiety? Not with the EX90
A key concern for many prospective electric vehicle owners is range anxiety—an issue that the EX90 tackles head-on. Offering an impressive range of 751 km on a single charge in urban conditions, and 604 km on the combined cycle, the EX90 makes long-distance travel a seamless experience. Its 111 kWh battery can be recharged from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes with a 250 kW DC fast charger, significantly reducing downtime during journeys and ensuring that you can focus on the road ahead, not the charging station.
Electrification at Its Core
The Volvo EX90 is part of a broader strategy to electrify the brand’s entire lineup. Joining other electric models such as the EX30, C40 Recharge, and XC40 Recharge, the EX90 reflects Volvo’s commitment to sustainable mobility. The Swedish automaker aims to make electrified vehicles—whether fully electric (BEVs) or plug-in hybrids (PHEVs)—account for 90-100% of its global sales by 2030. This ambitious goal underscores Volvo’s dedication to creating a cleaner, more sustainable future, without compromising on luxury, performance, or safety.
A Glimpse into the Future of Luxury SUVs
With its advanced safety features, long-range capabilities, and exceptional performance, the Volvo EX90 is set to redefine what an electric luxury SUV can be. As Volvo continues to push the boundaries of automotive innovation, the EX90 stands as a beacon of what the future of electrified mobility holds: a fusion of cutting-edge technology, sustainability, and the legendary Volvo focus on safety and design.
Pricing and further specifications for the EX90 in South Africa will be announced closer to its official launch, but one thing is certain: the EX90 will set a new benchmark in the premium electric SUV market.
