Volvo Cars has once again demonstrated its commitment to safety, with the fully electric Volvo EX90 SUV achieving the maximum five-star rating in the latest Euro NCAP safety assessments. This recognition places the EX90 among the highest-performing vehicles in Europe this year, further cementing Volvo’s reputation as a pioneer in automotive safety.
Euro NCAP, Europe’s leading independent car safety evaluation program, provides consumers with reliable insights into a vehicle’s protective capabilities. In the latest round of testing, the seven-seat EX90 scored exceptionally well in both adult and child protection categories, highlighting its suitability as a family SUV.
“Volvo Cars has long been a pioneer in automotive safety, and the EX90 is the latest example of that leadership,” says Åsa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “It builds on more than 55 years of real-world crash research, informing how we design our cars for traffic situations people face every day – not just controlled test environments. This Euro NCAP result shows that our commitment to real-world protection translates into top performance in independent safety tests.”
Volvo’s safety philosophy is rooted in extensive research: data from over 50,000 real-life accidents involving more than 80,000 people informs the company’s approach to safety innovation. Combined with virtual and physical testing, this wealth of knowledge underpins the Volvo Cars Safety Standard, an internal benchmark that exceeds official safety requirements.
The EX90 is not only safe but also smart, connected, and fully electric. Its advanced safety systems are powered by cutting-edge software, core computing, and a suite of sensors that process real-time data to anticipate potential hazards. Over-the-air updates ensure these features continuously evolve, improving protection and convenience over time.
At the heart of the EX90’s safety technology is Safe Space Technology, a bespoke system designed to work seamlessly to protect occupants and those around the vehicle. Advanced cameras, radars, and sensors allow the car to understand its surroundings, helping to prevent accidents before they happen. In the event of a collision, the SUV’s state-of-the-art restraint systems and structural engineering are specifically tuned to minimise injury to all passengers.
Among the EX90’s standout innovations is the driver understanding system, recognized as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2024. This system monitors the driver’s state, offering support if they become tired, distracted, or otherwise impaired. Complementing this is full-cabin occupant sensing, which can detect even the subtlest movements—such as a baby’s breathing—alerting the driver if attention is required.
The EX90’s five-star Euro NCAP rating adds to a growing list of accolades for Volvo’s flagship SUV, including the prestigious World Luxury Car award earlier this year. By combining advanced technology, real-world research, and an unwavering focus on safety, the Volvo EX90 continues to define the benchmark for protective innovation in the automotive world.
