Volvo Cars has ushered in a new era of immersive in-car audio with the introduction of Abbey Road Studios Mode, a world-first sonic experience developed in collaboration with Bowers & Wilkins and the legendary Abbey Road Studios. This innovative sound mode—designed to replicate the distinctive acoustics of the world’s most iconic recording studio—is now rolling out via a free over-the-air update to Volvo EX90 vehicles equipped with the optional Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity Audio system.
First announced in 2024, Abbey Road Studios Mode is the culmination of cutting-edge audio engineering, meticulous sound calibration, and decades of musical heritage. The result is a sound environment that delivers the emotional depth, spatial realism, and tonal warmth once reserved for the world’s greatest artists and producers.
A Studio-Grade Sound Experience
Available exclusively to EX90s featuring the Bowers & Wilkins system, this mode allows occupants to experience music as if it were being played back inside the very halls where landmark albums by The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Amy Winehouse, and Lady Gaga were recorded.
The feature includes a curated selection of presets tailored to different listening preferences, along with a powerful Producer Mode, which grants users the freedom to manipulate the sonic landscape. Whether it’s shifting from a retro vintage profile to a sleek modern acoustic, narrowing or widening the stereo image, or adjusting spatial elements, Producer Mode enables users to become the engineers of their own in-car concert.
“The Abbey Road Studios Mode brings the unique sound of our spaces and equipment to the Bowers & Wilkins system in the Volvo EX90 for the first time, allowing the driver to shape and personalise the sound in the car for an unparalleled listening experience,” said Jeremy Huffelmann, General Manager of Abbey Road Studios.
Acoustic Excellence, Defined
At the heart of this innovation is the EX90’s ultra-quiet cabin and its meticulously engineered 25-speaker, 1610-watt Bowers & Wilkins audio system, which supports Dolby Atmos playback. Tuned in tandem by Bowers & Wilkins and Volvo’s own audio engineers, the system transforms the car’s interior into a mobile soundstage.
“We use technology to improve everyday life for our drivers, so we’re excited to offer the Abbey Road Studios Mode in the Volvo EX90,” said Anders Bell, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Volvo Cars. “This world-first experience is a perfect example of how our over-the-air capabilities can bring continuous value to our customers.”

A Milestone in Software-Defined Mobility
The launch of Abbey Road Studios Mode reflects Volvo Cars’ broader ambition to lead the transformation toward software-defined vehicles, with seamless updates and evolving features that enhance ownership over time. The EX90 is part of a growing global fleet of over 2.5 million vehicles across 85 countries capable of receiving these updates.
For future customers, the Abbey Road Studios Mode will come standard in EX90 and ES90 models equipped with the Bowers & Wilkins system straight from the factory.
Innovation Meets Legacy
This collaboration bridges the timeless heritage of Abbey Road with the forward-thinking technology of Volvo and Bowers & Wilkins. It brings to life a shared vision: delivering emotionally resonant, high-fidelity experiences in everyday life.
Whether you’re commuting, road-tripping, or simply parked in silence, Abbey Road Studios Mode turns every drive into a masterclass in audio excellence.
