Volvo Car South Africa has solidified its position as the country’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, topping the charts in overall EV sales for 2024. The Swedish automaker achieved remarkable success, driven by the outstanding performance of the Volvo EX30, which claimed the title of South Africa’s best-selling battery-electric vehicle (BEV) with 406 units sold during the year.
Volvo EX30: South Africa’s Favourite EV
The EX30, Volvo’s compact electric crossover, has not only captivated South African consumers but has also gained industry recognition. Recently announced as a finalist in the prestigious 2025 Car of the Year (COTY) competition, sponsored by Old Mutual Insure, the EX30 stands out as the only electric contender among 17 finalists. This accolade underscores the model’s significant impact on the local automotive landscape.
Expanding Leadership Beyond the EX30
Volvo’s dominance in the EV segment extends beyond the EX30. The brand’s larger electric offerings, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, further reinforced its leadership by securing third place in the overall EV rankings with 133 units sold in 2024. In total, Volvo Car South Africa delivered 539 electric vehicles throughout the year, surpassing its nearest competitor by an impressive 20.86% margin.

The Future of Volvo’s Electrification in South Africa
Volvo’s success in South Africa reflects its broader global commitment to sustainable mobility. The brand is poised to strengthen its EV lineup with the upcoming flagship EX90, a model set to push the boundaries of luxury electric mobility. Additionally, the highly anticipated EX30 Cross Country is set to debut soon, offering eco-conscious adventurers a rugged yet sustainable driving option.
Markus Cromwell, Commercial Director at Volvo Car South Africa, expressed enthusiasm about the company’s progress:
“The success of our electric vehicles in South Africa speaks volumes about their capabilities and exceptional value for money in the electric car segment. With a starting price of R791,900, the EX30 offers unmatched value while delivering the safety and luxury features our customers expect.”
Aligning with Volvo’s Global Vision

The brand currently offers a diverse range of powertrains, including battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and mild hybrids (MHEVs), ensuring that customers have versatile options tailored to their needs. By 2030, Volvo aims for 90-100% of its global sales to be electrified vehicles, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and cutting-edge innovation.
As Volvo continues to lead South Africa’s transition to electric mobility, its unwavering focus on safety, performance, and environmental responsibility is setting new benchmarks in the automotive industry.
