WOLFSBURG – A new chapter unfolded at Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg plant this week as the Tayron, the brand’s latest SUV offering, officially entered series production. Marking its place alongside the Golf, Tiguan, and Touran, the Tayron becomes the fourth model produced at Volkswagen’s largest and most historic facility, a site that has manufactured over 48 million vehicles—more than any other car plant globally.
Plant Manager Uwe Schwartz and Works Council member Jürgen Mahnkopf led the celebratory event, joined by employees representing the diverse array of manufacturing disciplines involved in bringing the Tayron to life. The milestone underscores Wolfsburg’s pivotal role within Volkswagen’s global production network.
A Collaborative Triumph
The launch of the Tayron highlights the collaborative spirit of Volkswagen’s workforce, a sentiment echoed by Uwe Schwartz:
“A car launch is always a team effort, involving the entire production team. With the Tayron, many cogs meshed perfectly: from the press shop to body construction, painting, assembly, and vehicle completion.”
Integrating Tayron production into Assembly Line 4 presented a unique challenge, particularly as Tiguan production continued uninterrupted. Despite the complexity, Schwartz commended the seamless coordination across departments, including Procurement and Technical Development, which ensured the project remained on schedule.
The achievement reflects Wolfsburg’s enduring legacy as a benchmark in Volkswagen’s production network. Christian Vollmer, Board Member for Production and Logistics, lauded the plant’s accomplishments:
“Wolfsburg has always been a role model within our production network – and will continue to fulfill this role even in challenging times. The successful Tayron SoP sends a strong signal to other locations.”

The Tayron: A Versatile Newcomer
The Tayron, Volkswagen’s second-largest SUV in Europe after the Touareg, embodies innovation and versatility. Designed with optional seven-seat configurations, it caters to diverse family and lifestyle needs. The first unit—a striking Ultra Violet Metallic model with a 2.0-litre TDI engine and panoramic roof—rolled off the line this week, setting the stage for the production of demonstration vehicles for European dealerships.
Scheduled to debut in showrooms in March, the Tayron offers customers a choice of seven efficient powertrains, including two next-generation plug-in hybrid options. These eHybrid models boast an electric range exceeding 100 kilometres and a total driving distance of up to 850 kilometres, reaffirming Volkswagen’s commitment to sustainable mobility.
Securing Wolfsburg’s Future
For Jürgen Mahnkopf, Deputy Chairman of the General and Group Works Council, the Tayron symbolizes more than just a new vehicle—it represents a beacon of stability and growth for the Wolfsburg site.
“The Tayron SoP marks an important milestone for Wolfsburg. I am confident our new SUV will build on the success of its predecessor, the Tiguan Allspace, and contribute significantly to job security.”
The launch comes amidst a period of intense activity at the plant, with the simultaneous rollouts of the new Tiguan and the upgraded Golf. Mahnkopf praised the production team’s resilience and dedication, emphasizing the collective effort that brought the Tayron to fruition.
Looking Ahead
As Volkswagen ramps up Tayron production in the coming weeks, anticipation grows for its market debut. With its robust design, advanced powertrains, and Wolfsburg pedigree, the Tayron is poised to capture the imagination of customers across Europe.
Volkswagen’s latest SUV not only strengthens its portfolio but also underscores the Wolfsburg plant’s enduring reputation as a hub of innovation and excellence. As Schwartz aptly concluded, “Our colleagues can be proud of this achievement. It is a testament to teamwork, precision, and the spirit of Volkswagen.”
