Kariega, 9 October 2025 – In a hands-on initiative aimed at igniting curiosity and fostering innovation, Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) recently partnered with Nelson Mandela University’s STEM in ACTION programme to provide over 100 Grade 9 learners with an immersive introduction to the world of automotive engineering.
On 30 September and 1 October, 114 learners from six schools across Nelson Mandela Bay—Andrew Rabie High School, Strelitzia High School, Uitenhage High School, Hoërskool Cillié High School, Marymount Secondary School, Motherwell High School, and Sanctor High School—visited VWGA’s Product Development division. The two-day engagement offered students a unique opportunity to witness first-hand the innovative work being carried out by VWGA engineers.
STEM in ACTION, a community engagement initiative led by the Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment, and Technology at Nelson Mandela University, supports Grade 8–12 learners and educators in Mathematics and Physical Science. The programme aims not only to strengthen academic foundations but also to expose learners to STEM-related careers, opening doors to opportunities that might otherwise remain undiscovered.

“Our aim at STEM in ACTION is to ignite curiosity and open doors to opportunities that many learners may not have imagined possible,” said Nabeelah Jappie, Marketing Coordinator at STEM in ACTION. “Activities like these make science and engineering both exciting and accessible, while also equipping young people with the scarce skills they will need to thrive in the future. Collaborations with industry partners such as VWGA are invaluable in showing learners the real-world application of classroom learning.”
During their visit, learners were divided into small teams and tasked with building miniature vehicles, designed to race down a ramp. Excitement filled the room as students cheered for their creations, learning through play how problem-solving, creativity, and innovative thinking underpin real-world engineering.
“This is the first year that VWGA has partnered with STEM in ACTION, and we are committed to inspiring learners to explore careers in STEM,” said Réhan Strydom, Head of VWGA’s Product Development Division. “By opening our doors and demonstrating what engineering looks like in practice, we hope to nurture curiosity and passion, and contribute to developing the next generation of problem-solvers who will help drive both our industry and our country forward.”
The collaboration marks a meaningful step toward addressing South Africa’s growing need for skilled engineers and innovators. By blending practical experience with academic support, initiatives like these play a crucial role in equipping young learners with the tools and inspiration to shape the future of science and technology in the country.
