Volkswagen Group’s nine-month financial results for 2024 reflect a complex economic landscape where cost challenges and strategic adjustments are at the forefront of their operational approach. As outlined by CFO & COO Arno Antlitz, the Group’s current performance has intensified Volkswagen’s commitment to its efficiency-focused strategies, including cost reduction initiatives across its brand divisions, to drive a stronger operating margin.
Key Financial Metrics in Challenging Times
Volkswagen Group reported a modest increase in overall sales revenue, reaching €237.3 billion, up slightly from €235.1 billion in the same period last year. However, the automotive sector experienced a marginal decline, attributed to reduced vehicle volumes, countered somewhat by revenue increases in the Group’s Financial Services division. Despite these revenue adjustments, Volkswagen’s operating result took a 21% dip to €12.9 billion, yielding a current operating margin of 5.4%, compared to last year’s 6.9%.
This operating result was significantly impacted by restructuring expenses, mainly at the Core and Progressive brand levels, totaling €2.2 billion. These restructuring costs are part of a broader strategic alignment aimed at sustaining profitability and agility within an increasingly competitive and electrified market landscape. Additionally, expenses for new model introductions and elevated fixed costs placed further pressure on the operating margin.
Volkswagen’s Automotive Division recorded a 34% decline in net cash flow, down to €3.3 billion, influenced by working capital adjustments. However, Q3 brought some relief with a net cash flow boost, demonstrating the company’s ability to optimize capital amidst ongoing adjustments.

Market Demand and Strategic Positioning
Volkswagen Group’s product portfolio, spanning internal combustion, hybrid, and full-electric vehicles, continues to find solid market traction, particularly in Western Europe, where Q3 2024 orders increased by 27% year-on-year. This heightened demand reflects Volkswagen’s commitment to product innovation and reinforces the brand’s confidence in its strengthened lineup.
Globally, however, the Group saw a 4% reduction in vehicle sales, with 6.5 million units sold in the first nine months, down from 6.8 million in 2023. Regional dynamics reveal a nuanced landscape: while North and South America experienced growth of 4% and 16%, respectively, declines in China (-12%) and a minor decrease in Western Europe (-1%) offset these gains.
Revised Outlook and Year-End Expectations
Volkswagen’s outlook for the full year 2024, recently updated in its ad hoc release, projects deliveries close to 9 million vehicles, a slight reduction from 2023. Group sales revenue is anticipated to reach €320 billion, with an estimated operating profit of around €18 billion, corresponding to an operating return on sales of 5.6%. For the Automotive Division, the Group forecasts a net cash flow of €2 billion, accounting for planned cash outflows related to mergers and acquisitions, including a projected €2 billion investment in a joint venture with Rivian.
Net liquidity in the Automotive Division is expected to stabilize between €36 and €37 billion by year-end, reflecting Volkswagen’s cautious yet determined approach to capital allocation within a challenging economic environment.

- Progressive Brand Group: Noted for its focus on premium and luxury markets, the group faced a notable decline, with an operating margin dropping from 9.1% in 2023 to 4.5% in 2024. Revenue reductions reflect restructuring costs and investments in new model rollouts.
- Sport Luxury Brand Group: Achieved a strong 14.6% operating margin with €25.9 billion in revenue, led by high-margin offerings from brands like Porsche. However, this margin is down from 18.8% last year, influenced by market dynamics and cost increases.
