Since the 1950s, the southern suburbs of Johannesburg have reverberated with the burble and growl of American V8s. Long before the muscle car craze took over the United States in the 1960s, South Africans had already fallen under the spell of chrome-laden cruisers and roaring engines that embodied the optimism and excess of post-war America.

Now, more than six decades later, that same spirit lives on—stronger than ever—south of the CBD, where the Nasrec Expo Centre will once again host The Classic Car Show on Sunday, July 6, 2025. Organised by motoring aficionado Paulo Calisto, the event is now in its 13th year and has become a touchstone for vintage motoring culture in South Africa.

A Legacy Forged in Steel and Horsepower

“The South,” as locals affectionately call the area, holds an unmatched reverence for American muscle. It was here, amid the modest lock-up garages and shaded carports of Johannesburg’s older suburbs, that these icons of engineering were meticulously preserved. Step outside on a quiet morning and you might still hear the guttural idle of a 1957 Chevy Bel Air echoing off the brick walls—living, breathing proof of a bygone golden era.

Calisto’s own introduction to this movement was nothing short of revelatory. “I approached a restaurant in the area for parking space, expecting a few hundred cars at most,” he recalls. “I was absolutely floored when thousands turned up. I had to scramble like crazy to make space for all those giant V8 American classics.”

The enthusiasm ignited that day has fuelled a decade-long passion project, culminating in what has become the premier classic motoring event in South Africa.

The Forgotten Origins of the Muscle Car Era

While many consider the 1960s as the dawn of the muscle car age, automotive historians often look further back—to the late 1950s—as the true genesis of the movement. That was when American manufacturers started engaging in a now-legendary horsepower race. Chevrolet fired the first shot with the introduction of its V8 in the 1955 Bel Air, catapulting horsepower from modest triple digits to figures north of 300 by the decade’s end.

Styling was no less flamboyant. The 1950s saw an explosion of creativity—grilles that grinned like crocodiles, headlights that gawked like startled owls, and tailfins that looked like they could slice the air like jet stabilisers. Every car seemed to be competing not only for performance but for presence.

Today, these sculpted machines roll proudly into The Classic Car Show, where restored Chevys, Fords, Pontiacs, and Chryslers gleam in the Gauteng sun, keeping the torch of American muscle burning brightly on African soil.

The Best Muscle Cars in the Country—Right Here

By most accounts, the best-restored muscle cars in South Africa hail from the south of Jo’burg. Their restoration quality—often exceeding American standards—is a testament to the area’s deep-rooted passion and craftsmanship.

Expect to see a mouth-watering selection of late ‘60s and early ‘70s muscle legends at this year’s show: Ford Mustangs, Camaro SS models, Dodge Chargers, Chevelle SS396s, and more, each lovingly restored to concours quality. These cars will be showcased in the muscle car zone accessible via Gates 5 and 7, starting at 7am for classic entrants and from 9am for the public.

Beyond the V8: British, European and Other Classics

The Classic Car Show is about more than just American muscle. Visitors will encounter a time-warp of international motoring history spanning the 1950s through the 1980s. The British contingent includes Morris Minors, Austin A40s, Ford Anglias, and the ever-popular 105E Anglia—the one with the cheeky reverse-slope rear window that always raises a smile.

No visit is complete without a nod to the revolutionary Mini, launched in 1959. With its compact layout, front-wheel drive, and transverse-mounted engine, it laid the foundation for all modern hatchbacks and was voted second in the 1999 Car of the Century rankings.

Rare and eccentric gems will also grace the show grounds: German two-stroke DKWs that cackle like popcorn machines, boxy Borgwards, elegant Peugeots, Renaults, and of course, the flair of Italian design seen in Alfa Romeos and classic Porsche 911s.

The Young-Timers Join the Fun

For those who came of age in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, nostalgia comes on four wheels. The show will include Mk I Golfs, Citi Golfs in bold red, yellow, and blue hues, as well as Ford Escorts in 1600 Sport and RS2000 form—all part of the so-called “young-timer” era, increasingly cherished by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

An Enthusiast’s Journey

Since launching the show in 2012, Paulo Calisto has amassed his own enviable collection of 14 classic vehicles. Among them are a Chevy pick-up, a rare Brazilian VW Kombi, and a flamboyant 1970s boat-tail Cadillac. “It’s been an amazing journey of discovery,” he says, reflecting on more than a decade spent preserving automotive history.

Know Before You Go

Classic car owners and one passenger will enjoy free entry through Gate 7 from 7am, with all classics asked to be parked by 8am.

Spectators are encouraged to arrive from 9am via Gate 5, where pre-booked tickets via Computicket cost R100 for adults and R40 for children under 12. On-the-day entry is available at the gate for R120 (adults) and R50 (children).

Family Fun and Food Galore

Beyond the roar of V8s and the gleam of chrome, the show offers an entire day of family-friendly activities. Live music, helicopter rides, jumping castles, and a curated selection of top-tier food and drink vendors will keep visitors entertained and well-fed throughout the day.

Whether you’re a lifelong petrolhead, a curious newcomer, or simply in the mood for a nostalgic stroll through decades of design and engineering brilliance, The Classic Car Show 2025 promises an unforgettable celebration of motoring culture.

So polish your chrome, fire up your classic, or bring the family down for a Sunday like no other—where every corner of Nasrec will echo with horsepower, heritage, and heart.
