Celebrating five decades of automotive journalism excellence in Northern Ireland
In 1975, the automotive world saw the debut of some of its most iconic models — the Ferrari 308, Triumph TR7, and Vauxhall Cavalier. But that same year also marked a milestone in motoring media closer to home: the formation of the Ulster Motoring Writers Association (UMWA).
Over the past half-century, UMWA has played a pivotal role in chronicling the evolution of the motor industry, with its members contributing authoritative reviews, news, and features to Northern Ireland’s leading newspapers, magazines, radio stations, and, more recently, digital platforms. From test-driving the latest releases to covering pivotal industry shifts, UMWA has consistently delivered trusted automotive content to the public.
Today, as UMWA celebrates its 50th anniversary, it takes a significant step into the digital age with the launch of a brand-new website — a move that underscores its commitment to staying relevant in a fast-evolving media landscape.

“This is a landmark moment for the association,” said UMWA Chairman Jim McCauley. “We traditionally produced a UMWA Yearbook every other year, but to move with the times and to celebrate our 50th anniversary, we have launched a new website. This will allow press offices to see the broad span of our outlets as well as providing contact details for all of our members.”
The newly launched site offers a comprehensive directory of UMWA members, complete with publication affiliations and contact information — streamlining collaboration between journalists and the wider automotive industry. It’s designed not only as a resource for PR professionals and manufacturers, but also as a testament to the enduring role of automotive journalism in Northern Ireland.
McCauley added, “We thank all of the press offices that have supported us so well in the past, and see this new website as a means to keep UMWA at the forefront of providing responsible car reviews.”
With a legacy rooted in credibility and a forward-looking approach to digital media, UMWA enters its sixth decade stronger than ever. As the automotive industry continues to innovate, so too does the community that reports on it — ensuring that Northern Ireland’s motorists remain well-informed through trusted, expert coverage.
