Blackburn, 16 October 2025 – The average car on Britain’s roads is now close to ten years old, marking the oldest figure ever recorded in the UK’s national car parc. In response to this trend, Warrantywise has analysed its comprehensive Reliability Index to reveal the top ten most dependable used cars aged between eight and twelve years, giving motorists critical insight into long-term ownership costs.
The Reliability Index, widely recognised as one of the UK’s most trusted measures of vehicle dependability, ranks cars not only by overall reliability but also by both average and highest repair costs. This approach allows prospective owners to understand the full spectrum of potential maintenance risks and costs – even among vehicles deemed dependable.
Leading the rankings, the Toyota Yaris scores an impressive 93.6 out of 100, with an average repair cost of just £651. Its highest recorded repair request, £2,312, remains well below many competitors, underlining the model’s reputation as both reliable and cost-effective for long-term ownership.

Other superminis also dominate the top ten, reflecting the segment’s enduring resilience. Honda features strongly, with the Civic and CR-V achieving scores of 93.0 and 89.0 respectively. SUVs make a modest appearance, with the Mitsubishi Outlander scoring 85.9 but recording the highest single repair cost in the group at £9,531. This illustrates the importance of evaluating both likelihood of breakdown and potential financial impact when considering older vehicles.
Rising living costs, supply chain challenges, and evolving motoring regulations have all contributed to drivers holding on to their cars for longer. RAC Foundation data confirms that at the end of 2024, the average UK vehicle was nine years and ten months old. As a result, reliability has become a critical consideration for motorists navigating an increasingly complex used car market.
