Abu Dhabi, UAE – 17 November 2025 – The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) reached a historic milestone as six fully autonomous racecars competed in the world’s first six-car Grand Final at Yas Marina Circuit. Germany’s TUM retained its championship title, showcasing the rapid evolution of AI-driven motorsport and signaling a new era in high-performance autonomy.
In a fiercely competitive 20-lap showdown, TUM faced relentless pressure from Italy’s Unimore. From the outset, Unimore pushed past TUM for the lead on lap two, initiating a high-speed duel at over 250 km/h. The two teams remained separated by mere fractions of a second, navigating back-of-the-pack traffic and executing split-second overtakes. The decisive moment came when Unimore collided with Constructor mid-corner, handing TUM the advantage and the eventual victory. Despite the setback, Unimore claimed the Fastest Lap Award, underscoring the team’s remarkable pace.
Joining TUM on the podium were UAE’s TII Racing in second and Italy’s PoliMOVE in third, marking an impressive international spread in the $2.25 million competition. Eleven teams from around the globe had competed in the season, highlighting A2RL’s growing reputation as a proving ground for autonomous technology.
Trophies and medals were presented by His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, and H.E. Faisal Al Bannai, Adviser to the UAE President and Secretary General of the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC).
“H.E. Faisal Al Bannai envisioned A2RL as more than a race; it is a testbed for autonomous systems, advancing technology while building public trust,” said Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE, the ATRC entity overseeing A2RL. “Tonight’s Grand Final demonstrated the remarkable progress teams have made in just 18 months, from cautious experimentation to human-beating lap times and complex overtakes.”
Human vs AI: Narrow Margins
Adding drama to the event, former Formula 1 star Daniil Kvyat faced TUM’s autonomous car, HAILEY, in a rolling start challenge. Over ten laps, Kvyat set a best lap of 57.57 seconds, while HAILEY recorded 59.15 seconds. With only 1.58 seconds separating human and machine, the showcase highlighted the rapidly closing gap between AI and elite human drivers.
“Seeing the AI’s progress from 10-second gaps to fractions of a second is staggering,” Kvyat said. “Competing alongside HAILEY was an incredible experience and a glimpse into the future of motorsport.”
A Platform for Innovation and Education
A2RL’s impact extends beyond the track. Over 140 students from across the UAE participated in a parallel STEM Competition, racing miniature DeepRacer autonomous cars. UAE University won the University League, while SABIS – Ras Al Khaimah claimed the High Schools title, inspiring the next generation of AI and robotics talent.
The Grand Final also concluded Abu Dhabi Autonomous Week (ADAW), a six-day celebration of autonomous technology featuring summits, exhibitions, and the RoboCup Asia-Pacific. With over 8,000 spectators filling the North Grandstand, A2RL continues to grow as a global showcase for AI-driven innovation, blending motorsport spectacle with cutting-edge research.
Season 2 of A2RL confirmed the league’s role at the intersection of racing, mobility, and AI. As Prof. Markus Lienkamp, TUM Team Principal, noted: “Tonight we’ve seen not only a race, but the professional capability and rapid advancement of autonomous systems. The future of racing—and transportation—is happening now, and it’s autonomous.”
