Isn’t it funny how you fall back in love with your car when it’s had a good clean? There’s nothing better than setting off to work on a Monday morning with shiny tyres and windows and a rosy-smelling interior.

It’s especially satisfying to have a detailed car wash done when you get back from holiday, as many people recently did.

But there’s far more benefit to a thorough wash and polish than it being a mood-lifter, says the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA). It’s one of the best ways to spot problems.

“We are aware of how our vehicle performs when driving, but often overlook washing it. A regular car wash can help detect minor damage or problems before they turn into major repairs, saving you money down the road,” says Dewald Ranft, Chairperson of MIWA, which is a proud affiliate of the Retail Motor Industry (RMI) Organisation.

“By keeping your car clean and regularly inspecting it, you can spot any minor chips, scratches or dents that may require repairs. Moreover, regular washing can prevent rust and corrosion, which can lead to costly repairs or irreparable damage. “

Safety and resale value are also important reasons to incorporate car washing into regular maintenance, Ranft adds.

“Dirt, dust and grime build-up on your car’s windshield, mirrors and lights can obstruct your visibility while driving. If these are clean and clear it makes all the difference to how well you can see what is going on around you while driving, reducing the risk of accidents.

“And, if you are thinking of selling your car at some stage, bear in mind that a well-maintained exterior can make a positive first impression on potential buyers, indicating that the vehicle was cared for and maintained on a regular basis. Regular washing also helps prevent damage to the car’s exterior, ensuring that it retains its appearance and value.”

But apart from hitting the car wash, MIWA reminds motorists that there are other maintenance checks to be done when you return from a trip:

Tow bar: If you towed a trailer or caravan recently, it’s important to check for structural cracks and ensure all the bolts are fastened and secured.

Brakes: Towing a heavy load puts great pressure on brakes, so get an opinion on the status of your brakes from an accredited workshop before you run into trouble on the road.

Fluids: Have the levels of all fluids checked – engine oil, windshield washer fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, transmission fluid. It is especially important to check your brake fluid if you towed a heavy load as high temperatures can cause the fluid to discolour and accumulate moisture which can potentially lead to brake failure. Finally, you need to make sure there are no water leaks.

“One of the most vital yet often overlooked aspects of post-trip maintenance is checking your car fluids. By ensuring that each fluid is at the proper level and in good condition, you’ll extend the life of your vehicle, enhance performance and avoid costly repairs,” Ranft says.

“Take the first step in maintaining your vehicle by committing to regular car washes. In addition, book your services at an accredited workshop when these are due and seek advice immediately if you pick up any problems.

“An investment in your car’s maintenance, including regular washing, means you have peace of mind your car will take care of you for years to come.”
