South Wales teenager’s cardboard car creation earns recognition from Volkswagen UK and lifts family spirits after a difficult Christmas.
A teenager’s artistic ingenuity has turned leftover cardboard into a remarkable automotive tribute and secured his family the use of a cutting-edge Volkswagen ID.4 for two weeks. Oliver, a 15-year-old aspiring car designer from South Wales, channeled his love of cars and art into crafting the “VW Schnauzer – Louis Edition,” a heartfelt homage to his late family pet.
A Competition Fueled by Creativity
The BoxVolkswagen competition, launched by Volkswagen UK in December, challenged participants to transform cardboard waste from the holiday season into imaginative motoring masterpieces. The contest aimed to inspire budding designers to showcase their creativity, from young enthusiasts to adults with a passion for ingenuity.
Oliver’s submission stood out among numerous entries, impressing the judging panel, which included Volkswagen’s Head of Design, Andreas Mindt, and Erin Baker, Editorial Director at Auto Trader. Oliver’s creation skillfully transformed angular cardboard into fluid automotive curves, a feat that earned high praise.
Judge Andreas Mindt remarked, “Oliver’s car is really well made. It’s like a child would really be able to drive it. Really well done.” Erin Baker added, “The way he’s managed to, from the very angular nature of a box, make the curves of the bodywork is really good. Great work – it looks like one of those Wacky Racers.”

A Family Story Behind the Win
The triumph couldn’t have come at a better time for Oliver’s family. On Christmas Day, their beloved Schnauzer, Louis, passed away suddenly, leaving the family grieving. Oliver’s dedication to his project brought the household a much-needed uplift during a challenging period.
Oliver’s father, Jeremy, shared his pride and gratitude, saying, “We are thrilled by the news, and Oliver is over the moon – what a wonderful surprise. He has loved cars for most of his life and recently started exploring car design through art. He spent more than 25 hours creating this model, teaching himself to use a glue gun in the process.
“What makes this result so special is the connection to our dog Louis, who inspired the car’s name. This has been such a motivating and joyful experience for Oliver, so thank you, Volkswagen UK.”
The Prize: A Volkswagen ID.4 Experience
As the winner, Oliver’s family received a two-week loan of the Volkswagen ID.4, an all-electric SUV that combines style, performance, and sustainability. The ID.4 is available in four trims, including the sporty GTX Edition, with prices starting from £39,580 (including VAT).
Customers interested in exploring the ID.4 can benefit from zero-percent finance options through Volkswagen Financial Services, along with perks such as a free Ohme home charger or £500 in We Charge credit for public charging.
A Bright Future for a Budding Designer
Oliver’s success not only highlights his talent but also showcases the power of creativity to inspire and uplift. His passion for car design and dedication to his craft suggest a promising future in the automotive industry.
For now, the family is enjoying their well-deserved time with the Volkswagen ID.4, a reward that symbolizes more than just a win—it’s a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the love of cars.
