AMSTERDAM, September 30, 2024 – Stellantis N.V., one of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers, has announced a significant revision to its 2024 financial outlook in response to ongoing performance issues in North America and shifting global industry dynamics. The adjustments, which highlight the complexities facing automakers in today’s competitive landscape, underscore Stellantis’ commitment to addressing operational inefficiencies while navigating a turbulent market.

Accelerated Remediation Actions in North America
The most notable change comes from Stellantis’ decision to accelerate its planned normalization of inventory levels in the U.S. market. Originally targeting the first quarter of 2025 to reduce dealer inventory to 330,000 units, the company has moved up this goal to the end of 2024. This rapid adjustment will involve reducing North American shipments by more than 200,000 vehicles in the second half of 2024—doubling the initial guidance of a 100,000-vehicle reduction from the same period in 2023.

Additionally, Stellantis will implement increased incentives on 2024 and older model year vehicles in a bid to stimulate demand and clear excess inventory. To further mitigate the situation, the company is initiating productivity improvements, targeting both cost reductions and capacity adjustments to streamline operations.

A Challenging Global Backdrop
The revision to Stellantis’ outlook is not solely attributable to North American performance. The company has acknowledged that the global automotive market has deteriorated more significantly than anticipated at the start of 2024. Slower sales across most regions have compounded these challenges, and Stellantis now faces heightened competitive pressure, particularly from Chinese manufacturers who are expanding their presence in key markets. Furthermore, the industry is grappling with increased supply, intensifying the need for automakers to differentiate themselves through innovation and value.

Updated Financial Outlook for 2024
Given these developments, Stellantis has revised its financial guidance for the remainder of 2024. The company’s adjusted operating income (AOI) margin is now expected to be between 5.5% and 7.0%—a stark contrast to the previously anticipated double-digit margin. Stellantis attributes approximately two-thirds of this reduction to corrective actions taken in North America, while the remaining decline is linked to weaker-than-expected sales in various regions during the latter half of the year.

In addition to the downward revision in AOI, Stellantis’ industrial free cash flow for 2024 is projected to fall between -€5 billion and -€10 billion, a significant shift from the previously anticipated positive figure. This negative outlook is largely due to the lower AOI forecast and the impact of temporarily higher working capital during the second half of the year.

Strategic Response and Future Outlook
Despite the short-term challenges, Stellantis remains confident in its ability to weather the current market volatility and emerge stronger in 2025. The company will continue to leverage its competitive differentiators, including its diverse portfolio of brands and its commitment to electrification and digital innovation. The recovery actions being implemented are expected to deliver stronger operational and financial performance in the years to come.

With the automotive industry in the midst of a transformative period marked by technological advancements, evolving consumer preferences, and growing competition, Stellantis’ decisive actions reflect a proactive approach to maintaining its competitive edge. As the company navigates these headwinds, its focus on long-term sustainability and profitability remains clear.

Stellantis’ revised 2024 financial guidance underscores the complexities of operating in today’s rapidly changing automotive landscape. While the short-term outlook has been tempered by challenges in North America and broader industry headwinds, the company’s strategic actions signal a commitment to addressing these issues head-on. With a renewed focus on productivity, cost control, and market differentiation, Stellantis is positioning itself for a stronger recovery in 2025 and beyond.
