Following their unforgettable experience at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, two young South Africans, Abner Spannenberg and Kellan Wild, have stepped forward as champions for social and environmental causes within their communities. Their journey began when they were selected as mascots for the South African team, an honor that extended beyond the rugby field into impactful community service through the “Defenders of Tomorrow” initiative.

At just eleven years old, Abner and Kellan exemplify leadership and commitment to societal improvement. Abner, hailing from Cape Town, and Kellan, from Amanzimtoti, were chosen to represent their country on the global stage, not only for their enthusiasm for rugby but also for their evident passion for effecting positive change. This passion has since translated into significant charitable efforts following the World Cup held in France.

Abner Spannenberg’s philanthropic focus has been shaped by personal experiences within his family. Witnessing the challenges faced by his cousin, who has a hearing impairment, Abner was moved to support The Hear Always Foundation Trust, an organization committed to funding cochlear implants for both children and adults. This cause is close to Abner’s heart, as it aims to alleviate the kind of social exclusion his cousin endured during common childhood games. Additionally, Abner has contributed to the JAG (Jointly Achieving Growth) Sports and Educational Foundation Trust, which supports a rugby program for youth in disadvantaged areas. His involvement extends to his own educational environment as well; Rosewood Primary School, where he studies, received funds to upgrade its playground, enhancing the school experience for current and future students.

On the environmental front, Kellan Wild chose to direct his efforts towards the Team Up To Clean Up campaign, an initiative aimed at instilling a culture of recycling among the youth. His contributions have already made a tangible difference at Piet Retief Primary School, which has been outfitted with recycle bins and a waste separation station. These facilities are crucial first steps in a broader plan to expand the recycling program to other schools, fostering a regional culture of environmental stewardship. Kellan’s involvement underscores the importance of environmental conservation and aims to inspire his peers to take an active role in protecting their planet.

Both young heroes have been lauded for their contributions by the Defenders of Tomorrow program, which seeks to empower children to take actionable steps towards addressing the issues they care about. The program is part of a broader initiative by the Defender brand, which focuses on global citizenship, conservation, and support for vulnerable communities. The impact of Abner and Kellan’s actions is a testament to the program’s success in nurturing responsible, community-minded young leaders.

Through their initiatives, Abner and Kellan are not just improving conditions in their local areas but are also setting an example for other young individuals around the world. Their story is one of hope and action, proving that age is but a number when it comes to making a significant impact on the world. As they continue to grow and develop, their early experiences as mascots at a world sporting event will undoubtedly continue to influence their ethos of service and leadership in their ongoing endeavors to foster a better tomorrow.
