Driving Excellence Forward: Meet the 2026 Car of the Year Committee

The South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ) has announced the new Car of the Year (COTY) Committee for the 2026 competition, proudly sponsored by Old Mutual Insure. As the country’s longest-running and most respected motoring accolade, the Car of the Year title stands as a benchmark for automotive excellence — and the new committee is ready to uphold that legacy.

At the helm once again is Thami Masemola, who returns for his second year as Chairman. Known for his commanding presence across IN4RIDE, Radio 2000, and Power 987, Masemola leads a team of seasoned professionals united by their passion for motoring journalism and their dedication to integrity in the selection process.

Joining him on the 2026 Committee are:

  • Melinda Ferguson (City Press, Cape Talk)
  • Jason Woosey (IOL)
  • Sibonelo Myeni (Imoto Media, Ukhozi FM)
  • Brendon Staniforth (Maroela Media)

Together, they represent the rich diversity and depth of South African automotive journalism — from digital platforms to print, broadcast, and community media — ensuring that every voice and driving experience is reflected in this year’s competition.

A Celebration of Innovation and Integrity

“I’m incredibly proud to work alongside such a distinguished and diverse group,” said Masemola. “This team embodies the very best of South African motoring journalism — experienced, passionate, and committed to keeping COTY fair, credible, and exciting. With Old Mutual Insure’s steadfast support for the fourth year in a row, we are energized to take COTY to new heights.”

Under Masemola’s leadership, the committee will oversee every stage of the competition — from jury selection to the rigorous evaluation and testing process that determines the finalists and eventual winner. Beyond the prestige of the title itself, COTY has become a symbol of industry progress, highlighting how innovation, safety, design, and sustainability are shaping the future of mobility in South Africa.

A Partnership that Powers the Journey

Old Mutual Insure, returning for its fourth consecutive year as headline sponsor, continues to play a pivotal role in supporting this cornerstone of South African motoring culture.

“The SA Car of the Year competition sets the benchmark for automotive excellence,” said Presodhini Naicker, Executive: Marketing & Communication at Old Mutual Insure. “We’re thrilled to once again support a platform that celebrates the innovation and craftsmanship driving our motoring industry forward.”

Their continued commitment reflects a shared belief in empowering innovation and recognising the people and brands moving the industry ahead — not only through products, but through vision and resilience.

The Race for 2026 Begins

The 2026 competition is already gaining momentum as the Jury prepares to evaluate over 60 new models launched or set to launch in 2025. Each vehicle will be assessed across a range of categories that highlight performance, practicality, design, and technological advancement.

Testing days are scheduled for March 2026, where the vehicles will be put through their paces in real-world conditions before the category winners — and ultimately South Africa’s next Car of the Year — are crowned.

Last year’s titleholder, the BMW X3, set a high standard, but the incoming lineup promises fierce competition across every segment. From compact commuters to luxury SUVs and cutting-edge EVs, the road to the 2026 Car of the Year promises to be one of the most competitive yet.

A Legacy That Keeps Evolving

As the SAGMJ continues to evolve alongside the rapidly changing automotive landscape, the Car of the Year competition remains a celebration of excellence, innovation, and storytelling — reflecting not just the cars themselves, but the people who drive South Africa forward.

With a strong committee, trusted sponsorship, and an exciting year of contenders ahead, COTY 2026 is set to remind motorists why the road to recognition is paved with passion.
