The South African Motor Body Repairers’ Association (SAMBRA), an influential constituent of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI), has appointed Hilton van Breda as its new Area Representative for the Free State and Northern Cape. The appointment reflects SAMBRA’s strategic commitment to expanding its regional footprint and delivering more hands-on support to members.
With a career spanning over 25 years in the motor body repair and automotive refinishing industries, van Breda brings a wealth of experience and an impressive track record to the role. His professional journey includes senior positions at global and local industry giants such as BASF and Chemspec, and more recently, he served as a senior technician and estimator at RSB Automotive Refinishing in the Free State. This blend of technical expertise and practical workshop insight uniquely positions him to serve the region’s repairers with both empathy and authority.
Announcing the appointment, SAMBRA National Director Juan Hanekom noted the move was driven by growing requests from members for more direct, on-the-ground engagement. “We are listening to our members and committed to strengthening our regional presence,” said Hanekom. “Hilton is a respected figure in the Free State’s automotive community, known for his integrity, deep technical knowledge, and hands-on experience. He is the ideal person to support our members as they navigate industry challenges and capitalise on new opportunities.”

Van Breda echoed the sentiment, saying he is honoured to take on the role and eager to begin engaging with members throughout the two provinces. “Having worked on both the technical and supplier sides of the industry, I understand the realities of running a modern repair business — from navigating skills shortages and accessing quality products, to adopting the latest refinishing technologies,” he said.
“My objective is to be a reliable, approachable support resource for members. I want to help bridge the gap between policy and practice, and ensure profitability remains achievable, even in a demanding environment.”
In the immediate term, van Breda plans to travel extensively across the Free State and Northern Cape to meet with workshop owners and better understand their individual needs. “Each business is unique, and my priority is to ensure our members feel genuinely supported,” he added. “Whether it’s technical advice, training access or better dialogue between repairers, insurers and suppliers, I want to add tangible value.”
Hanekom concluded by reaffirming SAMBRA’s vision for a more responsive and regionally active association. “Hilton’s appointment marks another step forward in our mission to remain relevant and proactive in supporting the needs of our members. We wish him every success in this pivotal role.”
With Hilton van Breda at the helm in the Free State and Northern Cape, SAMBRA is clearly signalling its intent to empower its members with tailored, locally grounded support that enhances both operational resilience and long-term growth.
