Saharan Dust Warning for UK Car Owners: Clean With Care

Saharan dust from North Africa is set to fall across the UK. Autoglym shares expert advice on safely cleaning your car to avoid paint damage.

Car owners across the United Kingdom may soon notice an unusual reddish film settling on their vehicles, as fine sand and mineral deposits from the deserts of North Africa drift across the country. The phenomenon, commonly known as ‘Saharan dust’, is being carried northwards on warm southerly air currents and is expected to fall across much of the UK during Friday and through the weekend.

While the dusty residue may be unsightly, experts warn that rushing to clean it off could do more harm than good. According to Autoglym, the UK’s largest car care brand, the ultra-fine particles within Saharan dust can be highly abrasive. If removed incorrectly, they can leave permanent scratches and swirl marks embedded in a vehicle’s paintwork.

“If you find your once clean car suddenly covered in a fine layer of red dust, you are not alone,” said Paul Coley, Technical Director at Autoglym. “The dust won’t harm your car if left alone, but if you are too eager to remove it, you may cause long-term damage to your paintwork. That will be very difficult to correct, potentially requiring a costly machine polish.”

One of the most common mistakes drivers make is interacting with the dust before properly washing the vehicle. Wiping a finger across the surface or attempting to brush the particles away with a cloth can drag grains of sand across the paint, leaving behind a network of fine scratches that dull the finish.

The safest approach begins with removing as much contamination as possible before making physical contact with the bodywork. Using a pressure washer and a thick layer of snow foam is widely considered the most effective pre-wash method. A product such as Autoglym Polar Blast can be applied to coat the car in foam, allowing the cleaning solution to loosen dirt and lift particles from the surface before they are rinsed away with plenty of water. If snow foam equipment is not available, a thorough rinse with a pressure washer can still help dislodge much of the dusty residue before washing begins.

Once the majority of the debris has been safely removed, a careful contact wash can follow. Using a dedicated automotive shampoo and a quality wash mitt is essential, as these products are designed to lift particles away from the paint rather than pushing them across the surface. Autoglym shampoos are formulated to break the bond between dirt and paintwork, suspending contaminants in the wash solution so they can be rinsed away safely.

Enthusiasts often recommend the ‘two-bucket method’ during this stage. One bucket holds the shampoo solution, while the second contains clean water used to rinse the wash mitt after each pass over the vehicle. This simple process helps prevent particles from returning to the paintwork and reduces the risk of scratches. A large bucket fitted with a grit guard can also prevent debris from being picked up again as it settles to the bottom.

After washing and drying the car, it is worth taking a moment to inspect the paintwork for any lingering marks or fine scratches. Light blemishes caused by abrasive particles can often be corrected using modern polishing compounds. Products such as Autoglym Advanced Paint Restorer are designed to remove haze, swirl marks and minor scratches either by hand or with a machine polisher. Alternatively, coatings like Autoglym Paint Reviver can temporarily conceal fine imperfections by filling tiny gaps within the clear coat.

Applying a protective barrier once the vehicle is clean can also make a noticeable difference during future dust events. Sealants and ceramic sprays reduce the ability of dirt and mineral deposits to cling to paintwork, allowing contaminants to rinse away more easily during the next wash. Autoglym Rapid Ceramic Spray offers a quick application and up to three months of protection, while Polar Seal provides a durable sealant option for drivers equipped with a pressure washer.

Although Saharan dust events are relatively rare in the UK, they can leave vehicles looking dramatically dirtier than usual in a short space of time. Taking a careful, methodical approach to cleaning is the best way to preserve a car’s finish and avoid the costly paint correction that can result from hurried washing.

The latest range of Autoglym car care products is available from Autoglym.com, Amazon.co.uk, Halfords stores and independent retailers.
