Recent research has unveiled the severe condition of the UK’s roads, highlighting the substantial financial burden falling on motorists due to poor road surfaces. As local council budgets tighten, limiting their ability to maintain roads, Kwik Fit’s latest Pothole Impact Tracker (PIT) Report for 2024 has disclosed a concerning trend: UK drivers have incurred a total of £1.48 billion in pothole-related vehicle damage over the past year.
Historical data from 2018 indicated that an estimated £9.31 billion was necessary to restore the road network to adequate conditions. However, these funds were not secured, and since then, drivers have collectively spent approximately £9.5 billion on repairs due to pothole damage, mirroring the initial estimated deficit for road repairs. The cost of addressing road repairs has now escalated to an estimated £16.3 billion, underscoring that preventive measures could have been more economical.
This year’s figures show a 61% rise in pothole damage costs since 2018, which initially amounted to £915 million annually. There’s a slight improvement from 2023’s total of £1.67 billion, yet the average repair cost per incident now stands at £120, with over 660,000 car owners facing bills exceeding £300. The most frequently damaged car parts include tyres (51%), wheels (34%), and suspensions (27%), with a significant portion of damages not evident immediately after the incident.

Kwik Fit’s study revealed that 45% of pothole damages are initially undetected, with drivers often discovering issues themselves or during professional checks at garages. Notably, 60% of drivers report encountering at least one pothole weekly, a slight increase from previous years, highlighting a worsening trend in road conditions.
Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit, commented on the findings, emphasizing the long-term impact of deteriorating road conditions on the UK’s financial and safety landscape. He advises motorists to stay vigilant about pothole damage, suggesting maintaining correct tyre pressure, reducing speed, and giving ample space to navigate around potential potholes safely.
Griggs also recommends regular vehicle inspections post-pothole impacts, especially checking for subtle damages like slow punctures or compromised tyre sidewalls, which might not be immediately apparent. For those unsure about potential damages, Kwik Fit offers professional checks at over 600 locations nationwide, ensuring drivers can address any issues promptly and maintain road safety.
