Today 5 November 2013 Google UK is celebrating the birth of Raymond Loewy likely most famous for his invention and design of the Coca-Cola Companies first slenderized bottle.
His legacy however does not stop with the design of the Coca-Cola Bottle Raymond Loewy were also responsible for the design of the streamlined Greyhound bus, the John F. Kennedy postage stamp, the Lucky Strike cigarette package, locomotives for the Pennsylvania Railroad, the interiors of NASA’s Saturn I, Saturn V, and Skylab, the Sears Coldspot refrigerator, Schick electric razors, several Studebaker models, and the logos of Chubb Corp., Exxon, Greyhound, Nabisco, Shell, and the U.S. Postal Service.
Raymond Loewy was born in France to a Jewish family, Raymond Loewy spent most of his professional career in the United States as a designer for some of the most well-known brands in the world. Among his designs were the Shell, Exxon, TWA and the former BP logos, the Greyhound Scenicruiser bus, Coca-Cola vending machines, the Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 and S-1 locomotives, the Lucky Strike package, Coldspot refrigerators, the Studebaker Avanti and Champion, and the Air Force One livery. His career spanned seven decades.
Loewy retired at the age of 87 in 1980 and returned to his native France. He died in his Monte Carlo residence in 1986. He was survived by his second wife Viola and their daughter Laurence.
Today Google is celebrating his life and legacy and succeeded in reaching millions of people across the globe and providing Raymond Loewy with much deserved recondition for his work.
