Swansea’s Palace Theatre Transformed into a Modern Cultural Hub

R & M Williams Limited has been named Overall Master Builder of the Year 2025, recognised for their extraordinary restoration of Swansea’s historic Palace Theatre. The announcement was made at the prestigious Federation of Master Builders (FMB) Master Builder Awards, held on 26th September at Manchester’s Kimpton Clocktower Hotel.

The Neath-based construction firm earned the top honour for their £10 million transformation of the Grade II listed Palace Theatre, once a derelict landmark. Today, the theatre thrives as a modern workspace and cultural hub, a shining example of heritage conservation fused with contemporary design. The project is a key part of Swansea’s £1 billion city centre regeneration, converting decades of decay into a landmark of Welsh craftsmanship, collaboration, and civic pride.

Isuzu UK Celebrates Excellence in Construction

As headline sponsor of the bi-annual awards for the fourth consecutive time, Isuzu UK presented R & M Williams Limited with a brand-new Isuzu D-Max DL40. Finished in Obsidian Grey and fitted with site-ready accessories, including an over-rail liner, towbar, and bespoke ‘Master Builder of the Year’ decals, the D-Max was officially handed over to the winners at the end of October.

George Wallis, Head of Marketing at Isuzu UK, commented: “The Master Builder Awards recognise the very best in the business. We’re thrilled to hand over a brand-new Isuzu D-Max to R & M Williams for their outstanding work on Wales’ oldest surviving theatre. Like the D-Max, this project proves that with the right tools and determination, you can overcome any challenge.”

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, added: “We’re delighted to have Isuzu UK as our headline sponsor for a fourth consecutive time. Our continued partnership helps us celebrate the incredible skill and dedication of small builders across the country. The Isuzu D-Max is the perfect prize for a Master Builder—robust, dependable, and built to handle any challenge, just like our award winners.”

Master Builder Awards: Celebrating Craftsmanship and Innovation

Hosted this year by Nick Knowles, the Master Builder Awards are the UK’s premier celebration of small and medium-sized construction firms that deliver exceptional quality, innovation, and social value. The judging panel praised R & M Williams Limited’s restoration of the Palace Theatre as “a spectacular achievement that turned two decades of decay into something truly beautiful,” noting the project’s success in marrying heritage conservation with modern engineering and community benefit.

The awards ceremony highlights the remarkable contributions of Britain’s builders, showcasing projects that improve communities while pushing the boundaries of design and construction. R & M Williams Limited’s win underscores the impact small firms can have on revitalising historic landmarks and shaping the future of urban spaces.

Isuzu D-Max: Built for Builders

The 2025 sponsorship also coincides with the launch of the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross Commercial, a premium two-seater pick-up tailored for construction, trades, and business professionals. With tax efficiency, secure load space, and premium interior features, it’s designed to meet the demands of site life while delivering comfort and performance.
