South African cricket witnessed a historic moment at the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India, as the Proteas Women’s ODI team captured the hearts of the nation with a campaign defined by grit, skill, and unrelenting determination. Backed by Suzuki Auto South Africa, the national side produced a performance that will be remembered as one of the defining chapters in South African cricket.
For the first time ever, the Proteas Women reached the final of the 50-over World Cup, capping off a journey marked by record-breaking performances, composure under pressure, and remarkable team unity. Their path to the final was highlighted by a commanding semi-final win over England, where South Africa posted a formidable 319 for 7 before cruising to a 125-run victory – a match that epitomised their blend of power, precision, and poise.
In the final against hosts India, the Proteas battled valiantly in pursuit of 299 but ultimately fell 52 runs short. Despite the narrow defeat, their runner-up finish earned the team a hard-fought silver medal and the admiration of fans across the globe.
Central to this historic campaign was captain Laura Wolvaardt, whose leadership and world-class performance defined the tournament. Wolvaardt’s match-winning 169 in the semi-final set a record as the highest score ever by a captain in a World Cup knockout match. Her consistency throughout the tournament earned her the title of leading run-scorer, amassing an incredible 571 runs.
South Africa’s bowling attack also shone, with Nonkululeko Mlaba emerging as one of the most effective bowlers of the tournament, taking 13 wickets at a strike rate of 28.15. Veteran all-rounder Marizanne Kapp cemented her place in cricket history by becoming the all-time leading wicket-taker in Women’s World Cup competition, with a career total of 44 wickets – a testament to her longevity, skill, and dedication to the game.
Although the ultimate prize narrowly eluded them, the 2025 World Cup campaign marks a turning point for South African women’s cricket. The Proteas’ professionalism, consistency, and belief not only inspired fans at home but also set a benchmark for future generations to build upon.
“The Proteas Women have shown what is possible when talent meets tenacity,” said Henno Havenga, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Suzuki Auto South Africa, during a homecoming event at the marque’s Linbro Business Park headquarters. “Their success in one of the game’s most testing contests serves as a powerful reminder of the impact sport can have in uniting and inspiring a nation. We’re honoured to stand alongside Cricket South Africa as partners in driving the women’s game forward.”
Suzuki Auto South Africa has been at the forefront of supporting cricket in the country, cementing its commitment to Cricket South Africa in April 2025 as the organisation’s first headline sponsor since 2020. Under a multi-year partnership, Suzuki has provided at least 30 vehicles to CSA’s Development Hubs to foster grassroots growth, alongside 12 vehicles allocated directly to CSA to enhance organisational operations. This sponsorship underscores Suzuki’s dedication to advancing cricket in South Africa and supporting both the national Proteas Men’s and Women’s ODI teams.
“This World Cup has been an incredible journey for us as a team,” said Wolvaardt. “Reaching the final for the first time in South Africa’s history is something we’ll always cherish. It was a campaign filled with belief, hard work and moments that truly tested our character. I’m so proud of how we came together, played for one another, and showed the world what this team is capable of.”
She added, “The support we’ve received from back home has been absolutely amazing. From the messages during the tournament to the warm welcome when we arrived back, it really reminded us how much this team means to South Africans. We’re also incredibly grateful to our partner, Suzuki Auto South Africa, for standing behind us throughout this journey. Their encouragement and belief made us feel valued and appreciated every step of the way.”
The 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup may have concluded, but the legacy of the Proteas Women’s campaign will endure – a story of courage, skill, and ambition that has set a new benchmark for South African cricket and inspired a generation to dream bigger than ever before.
