London, 19 June 2025 – Parking sensors have officially taken the crown as the most indispensable in-car technology among UK motorists, according to a new study by eBay – outranking USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity and even advanced safety systems. But while drivers are clear about what tech they value most, millions may not realise these features can be added to their current vehicle – no upgrade necessary.
With 31.7% of the 36.1 million cars on UK roads now more than 12 years old, the research reveals that over 11.4 million drivers are potentially missing out on comfort, convenience, and safety innovations commonly found in newer models. Yet eBay, the UK’s leading online marketplace for vehicle parts and accessories, is proving that modernising an older car is more accessible than ever.
To bring this point home, eBay undertook a full tech transformation of a 2005 BMW 330Ci – a fan-favourite among enthusiasts and one of the most searched-for models on eBay UK. The two-decade-old coupé was retrofitted with a suite of modern features to demonstrate the potential of aftermarket upgrades.
A Modern Makeover for a Motoring Classic
Using only components available through eBay, technicians gave the 330Ci an enviable digital refresh. Upgrades included:
- Smartphone mirroring via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Blind spot warning systems
- A reversing camera
- Front and rear dashcams
- An upgraded infotainment system
These features mirror the functionality of much newer vehicles, helping drivers extend the life of their cars while enjoying modern-day convenience.
Function Over Flash: What Drivers Really Want
eBay’s survey of 2,000 UK drivers highlighted that motorists value practicality and comfort over cutting-edge automation. Parking sensors came out on top with 37% of votes, followed by USB charging and Bluetooth connectivity (both at 29%), and reversing cameras at 27%.
In contrast, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as autonomous emergency braking and lane keeping assist were met with hesitation. Almost two in five motorists (38%) reported finding these systems disconcerting, while 23% admitted they don’t know how to use them at all. And despite being standard on most new cars, more than half of drivers (51%) have never engaged certain ADAS or infotainment features – cruise control and lane assistance being among the most overlooked.

Tailored Tech, Not Templated Transport
Abir Tewari, UK Director of Commercial Operations, Parts & Accessories at eBay, noted that motorists are increasingly looking to keep their cars for longer. “The UK car parc is getting older and more than half of the motorists in our study expect to keep their current car longer than they’ve kept previous vehicles,” said Tewari. “Fortunately, the modern technology features valued most by drivers can be fitted to older models relatively easily, to bring them up to date.”
Automotive technician Hannah Gordon, who helped lead the BMW transformation, added: “Our tech upgrade shows how drivers can use eBay to modernise their vehicles on their own terms. It’s not just about adding gadgets – it’s about tailoring your car to suit your lifestyle, without the cost of a brand-new vehicle.”
BMW: A Popular Choice for Retrofits
BMW remains the most searched brand on eBay’s UK vehicle parts site in early 2025, and with good reason. Its older models, like the 330Ci, offer a strong foundation for customisation. BMW also operates an official store on eBay, alongside other top manufacturers like Ford, MINI, Toyota and Lexus, allowing customers to access authentic parts directly.
eBay also offers tools like My Garage, enabling customers to input their vehicle registration and browse only compatible parts – a major advantage when navigating the thousands of upgrade options available.
Top 10 Most Valued In-Car Technologies (According to UK Drivers):

- Assisted steering – 20%
- Heated seats – 17%
- Phone mirroring (Apple CarPlay/Android Auto) – 14%
- Dashcam – 13%

Looking Ahead: Convenience Over Complexity
While some newer technologies can overwhelm drivers, the eBay study proves there’s strong demand for intuitive, user-friendly features that simplify daily driving. And for those unwilling or unable to trade up to a new model, eBay’s expansive marketplace of parts and accessories offers a compelling alternative: upgrading what you have, rather than replacing it altogether.
In a world where sustainability, cost-consciousness and customisation are reshaping how we interact with cars, eBay’s retrofit-ready approach offers a timely solution. The car of the future, it seems, may already be parked in your driveway – it just needs a modern touch.
