Nissan has taken top honours at Japan’s prestigious automotive awards, with the fourth-generation Roox city car being named Japan Car of the Year 2026 by the Automotive Researchers and Journalists Conference of Japan (RJC). The award recognises vehicles that combine innovation, practicality, and driving enjoyment, and the Roox has clearly impressed on all fronts.

According to the RJC, the new Roox “enhances visibility and convenience while delivering fuel efficiency and premium driving performance,” underlining the model’s appeal for urban drivers seeking both practicality and style.

Maximising Space Within Kei Car Limits

The Roox’s design philosophy revolves around the concept of “Roomy×Max”, which inspired its name and reflects Nissan’s commitment to maximising interior space within the strict dimensions of a Kei car. In Japan, Kei cars must be no longer than 3.4 metres and no wider than 1.48 metres, providing owners with tax benefits, lower parking fees, and easier manoeuvrability in crowded cities.

Despite its compact exterior of 3.39 metres, the Roox boasts an interior length of 2.35 metres, comfortably seating four adults with best-in-class knee room. Clever engineering even allows the cabin to accommodate up to four 48-litre suitcases, an impressive feat for a city car.

Nissan designers have applied their “breeze” concept to the interior, creating a living-room-like atmosphere with flowing air and natural light. The result is a cabin that feels both spacious and playful, enhancing the driving experience for passengers and drivers alike.

Convenience Tailored for Urban Life

The Roox incorporates a suite of practical features that elevate everyday usability. Its rear sliding doors, standard for super-height wagons, open to a best-in-class 650 mm width and feature large grab handles for effortless entry, particularly useful for children.

The rear seats slide up to 320 mm, enabling drivers to interact with passengers in the back without leaving the front seat. Loading and unloading is equally convenient, thanks to a one-action lever on the rear seat that allows the boot to slide forward or backward in a single motion.

Advanced Safety and Driver Assistance

Nissan has equipped the Roox with cutting-edge driver assistance technologies designed to improve safety in urban environments. Notably, the Roox introduces the Intelligent Around View Monitor with Invisible Hood View, giving drivers a virtual perspective through the engine bay for enhanced visibility. Other features include 3D View and Front Wide View, providing comprehensive awareness at junctions and in tight spaces.

The model also benefits from an expanded ProPILOT suite, alongside:

  • Intelligent Emergency Braking: Helps avoid collisions with pedestrians and vehicles at intersections.
  • Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention (BSI): Prevents side collisions during lane changes.
  • Intelligent Blind Spot Warning (BSW): Detects vehicles approaching from behind.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA): Warns of crossing traffic when reversing.

Connectivity and Entertainment

For the first time, the Roox offers NissanConnect, integrating navigation, entertainment, and security. The system supports Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play, while optional features include a drive recorder and Remote Photo Shot service, allowing owners to monitor their vehicle via smartphone.

Looking Ahead

Currently exclusive to Japan, the new Roox sets a benchmark for Kei car innovation. Nissan has indicated that several of its design, safety, and technology features will influence future global models, hinting at a broader impact on the automaker’s lineup.

With its combination of roomy practicality, advanced safety, and modern technology, the fourth-generation Roox proves that city cars can be as innovative and enjoyable as larger vehicles—earning its well-deserved title as Japan’s Car of the Year 2026.
