Nissan South Africa is deepening its commitment to the country’s agricultural and mining sectors with the appointment of three new brand ambassadors who embody the technical expertise and real-world industries that keep South Africa moving.
Agricultural economist Wandile Sihlobo, industrial engineering specialist Gavin Kirstein, and mining engineer Shaldon Naicker have been named the inaugural Nissan Navara agricultural and industrial brand ambassadors for 2026, marking a strategic alignment between the brand and the backbone sectors of the national economy.
The announcement follows Nissan’s recent showcase at Nampo, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest agricultural exhibition, where the brand reaffirmed its long-standing relationship with South Africa’s farming community. With more than 60 years of local heritage, Nissan continues to position itself as a partner to industries that rely on durability, reliability, and performance in demanding environments.
Sihlobo is a prominent figure in South African agriculture, serving as Chief Economist of the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa and contributing to national economic policy discussions as a member of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council. He is also a published author and senior lecturer extraordinary at Stellenbosch University. At Nampo, he contributed to panel discussions exploring the future of agriculture and its role in shaping South Africa’s broader economic narrative.
Kirstein brings 15 years of experience in industrial engineering and power transmission systems, with a career focused on solutions used across agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. His work in engineered drives, chains, and mechanical systems places him at the intersection of infrastructure and productivity, where reliability is non-negotiable and performance is measured in uptime and endurance.
Naicker, founder and managing director of 1Leaf Consulting, is a mechanical engineer with extensive leadership experience in mining operations. Having previously served as Vice President of Engineering at Sasol Mining, and held senior roles across Sasol and Rio Tinto, he specialises in underground mining operations, asset management, and operational transformation. His background reflects the demanding technical environments that define South Africa’s resource sector.
All three ambassadors have recently taken delivery of the Nissan Navara PRO-4X, the flagship model in the Navara range. Built for challenging terrain, it combines a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine with a robust 4x4 drivetrain designed for capability and control in tough conditions.
The PRO-4X includes all-terrain tyres, an electronic rear differential lock, and enhanced suspension tuned for both durability and ride comfort. While engineered for demanding work environments, it also integrates refined interior features that prioritise comfort during long hours on the road or in the field.
Made and tested for local conditions, the Navara continues to position itself as a tool of trade as much as a lifestyle vehicle, balancing rugged utility with modern convenience and intelligent technology.
“With the legacy of Nissan’s heritage firmly in place, we are excited to invest in the rising industry leaders of tomorrow,” said Mohamed Abdel Samad, Managing Director of Nissan Africa. “And speaking of the future, with three new model introductions already planned within the next year, we are excited to continue to bring our local customers the very best of Nissan. Supported by our countrywide dealer network, our customers will always be our guiding priority.”
Nissan South Africa sales director Reichardt Groenewald emphasised the importance of the Navara’s role across multiple sectors and the value of aligning the brand with professionals who understand these industries firsthand.
“We are very grateful that Wandile, Shaldon and Gavin agreed to become brand ambassadors for the Navara. This is a vehicle that has proved its worth across the continent and these three business leaders really exemplify some of the key industries that Nissan has supported, and whose growth we have facilitated with our vehicles over the last 60 years in Africa,” he said.
The initiative extends Nissan’s ambassador programme in South Africa, which also includes rugby players Aphelele Fassi and Jordan Hendrikse, both of whom recently received Navara PRO-4X models at a Durban handover event.
