Johannesburg – The Road Safety Partnership South Africa (RSP-SA) has bestowed its inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award on Eugene Herbert, CEO of MasterDrive, in recognition of his extraordinary and enduring contributions to road safety in South Africa.
The award was presented during RSP-SA’s recent Annual General Meeting, where three accolades celebrated individuals and organisations driving safer roads nationwide. As part of the newly established Chairman’s Awards, the Lifetime Achievement Award acknowledges those whose dedication has profoundly shaped the landscape of road safety advocacy and implementation.
“Eugene Herbert exemplifies the tireless dedication and visionary leadership required to drive lasting change in road safety,” said the RSP-SA Vice-Chairperson. “His decades of commitment have not only saved countless lives but have also inspired a new generation of road safety advocates. His work is instrumental in raising national awareness, implementing effective interventions, and fostering partnerships that strengthen our collective efforts to reduce road fatalities and injuries across South Africa.”
In addition to Herbert’s recognition, the ceremony honoured two other key achievements:
- Private Sector Award – presented to the Automobile Association of South Africa (AASA) for its unwavering commitment that has significantly strengthened road safety initiatives nationwide.
- RSP-SA Partnership Award – awarded to Ntobeko Mogadime in recognition of her exceptional dedication to the organisation’s mission.
MasterDrive expressed pride in the achievement of their leader. “Eugene is at the helm of our organisation, leading by example in promoting safer roads in a country that has gained notoriety for its high fatality rates,” said Lauren Hawthorn, MasterDrive COO. “His lifetime of work demonstrates that sustained commitment and innovative approaches can make a tangible difference in addressing South Africa’s road safety challenges.”
Reflecting on the honour, Herbert said, “It was deeply humbling to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. The award represents not just my own efforts, but the collective work of countless others who share the vision of safer roads for all South Africans. Every life lost on our roads is a tragedy that impacts families, communities, and our nation. This recognition reinforces my commitment to continue innovating, collaborating, and educating until we see a fundamental shift in road safety culture across South Africa. I am grateful to stand alongside partners like RSP-SA who refuse to accept the current state of road safety as inevitable.”
The recognition of leaders such as Eugene Herbert serves as both a celebration of the progress made and a call to action for continued efforts to reduce the devastating impact of road injuries and fatalities. As South Africa continues its journey toward safer roads, dedicated advocates and leaders remain central to driving meaningful and lasting change.
