Elevating Design Excellence: CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon Set to Lead in Martorell’s Electrification Era
Martorell, 27th June 2024 – CUPRA boldly asserts its commitment to innovation with the launch of the redesigned CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon, marking a pivotal moment in the brand’s evolution. These models, embodying CUPRA’s relentless pursuit of design perfection, are set to redefine automotive standards as production gears up at Martorell. Deliveries are slated to commence in the third quarter of this year, promising enthusiasts a fusion of style, performance, and sustainability.
Wayne Griffiths, CEO of CUPRA, underscored the significance of these models: “The new CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon represent a cornerstone in our strategy for Martorell, bolstered by a historic €3 billion investment in electrification. These models exemplify our commitment to shaping the future of mobility.”
Both vehicles showcase CUPRA’s distinctive design DNA tailored for the next generation of drivers. Available as plug-in hybrids with over 100km of electric range or equipped with advanced petrol engines, the CUPRA Formentor stands as a testament to CUPRA’s prowess, having sold over 347,000 units since its inception. Similarly, the CUPRA Leon has made significant strides with more than 600,000 units delivered globally since 2018, solidifying its role as a key driver of CUPRA’s global expansion.
Martorell, a bastion of growth and innovation, plays a pivotal role in this transformation. Markus Haupt, Executive Vice-President for Production and Logistics at CUPRA, emphasized the factory’s evolution: “We’re integrating cutting-edge technologies and artificial intelligence to enhance manufacturing agility and product quality. Martorell, the third largest Volkswagen Group factory in Europe, remains integral to our growth strategy.”

Established in 1993, SEAT S.A.’s Martorell facility spans 2.8 million m² and has produced over 12 million vehicles across 45 models, exported to over 70 countries. Recent advancements include the installation of the Volkswagen Group’s first all-electric paint drying oven, highlighting Martorell’s shift towards sustainability and technological advancement.
Jose Arreche, Director of the Martorell plant, expressed optimism about the future: “We’re navigating a transformative phase, preparing for the launch of our first 100% electric models while maintaining our commitment to hybrid and combustion vehicles.”
SEAT S.A.’s electrification drive positions Spain as a hub for electric mobility within Europe. By 2025, Martorell will produce the 100% electric CUPRA Raval and Volkswagen ID 2.all, underscoring SEAT S.A.’s leadership in democratizing electric vehicle accessibility.
As SEAT S.A. continues its industrial and cultural metamorphosis, the move to dedicate a new assembly line for electric vehicles underscores its commitment to sustainable mobility and technological leadership.
